We are so excited to announce our 2026 Compound Collective Exhibition “𝓐 𝓒𝓪𝓼𝓮 𝓕𝓸𝓻 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓜𝓾𝓼𝓮” opening the same day as Outside In! OPENING RECEPTION: Sunday, October 11th, 6–9PM 6:00–6:30PM: Gallery Walkthrough led by Compound artists and curator Rui Jiang @secretary37_ 7:00–8:00PM: From「𝓣𝓱𝓮 𝓑𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓴𝓯𝓪𝓼𝓽 𝓒𝓵𝓾𝓫」: The Grassroots Nature of ‘Community’ and Its Temporal and Spatial Relations This group exhibition showcases the eclectic practices of 19 artists based at The Compound. This is a “case re-investigation” towards the muse, which in some discourses is rigidly equated with “the origin of the idea”, yet at the same time, the muse is regarded to conflict with ontology, and is excluded from discussions of ontology within creative practice. 𝓐 𝓒𝓪𝓼𝓮 𝓕𝓸𝓻 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓜𝓾𝓼𝓮 examines how the muse is historically gazed at and denied of its evolving nature within the affective push-pull relations between artists and artworks. “The muse, then, becomes clear and transparent, seemingly taking shape, through the creator’s obsession; yet she also becomes turbid and turbulent through their resistance to the external experience inherited from tradition. We inquire into this turbulence: she is the affect of history, an affection of yesterday once more, yet she is also not always directly pointed to because of the “defamiliarization” pursued through the creative process. She is the reason for the verb, the cause from which creative production begins—and what happens after she becomes the cause?” Featuring: Michael V. 🧑‍🩰Outside In: Compound Open House🧑‍🩰 Sunday, October 11 3–9PM Workshops RSVP required on Eventbrite! Larger than the sum of its parts, The Compound is a complex of spaces and a collective of artists, institutionally intersecting creativity, sociology, and the adaptive use of space. Outside In showcases the current state of production held behind our doors, where we are defined by our flexibility to adapt, mutate, and evolve. The best way to understand our vision, in its most current state, is to experience it. On October 11th, join us as we shift our focus to the thoughts and concepts that frame our collective creative practice. Navigate open studios, view the gallery, participate in workshops, and join panel discussions guided by our artist community. Our courtyard will offer a central place to gather, listen to music, share a meal, and enjoy the evening between activities. We invite you to join the nurturing of an organic creative movement and spend the day with us: outside, inside, and in between. @potato_lightfoot and I are still carrying @vermontstudiocenter with us after our time there this past May. We felt so safe and present living among artists and writers who opened themselves to one another and cared for each other so generously. We miss the countless conversations about art and life, walks in the woods, and dips in the ice-cold river that were delightfully excruciating. When Potato dreams, I know she’s dreaming of VSC (and the steak I gave her at our final dinner). Thank you to our cohort and the staff for making this experience possible. We hope to see you again ❤️

Anna and I got to know each other before we ever saw one another’s work. There were deep conversations. At the very end of the residency I saw her art during this conversation. It was a revelation. She spoke that made me think she was a beginner, she’s anything but that. VSC @vermontstudiocenter is a remarkable, supportive and loving environment. They support the artists who attend their residencies in every way possible. They have offered FREE residencies to artists and writers who are recovering from the LA fires. That’s the kind of people we’re talking about. After a devastating flood, they’re still rebuilding. I hope you will be moved to contribute to VSC. The Bethesda Painting Awards is open and accepting applications! The Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District invites eligible artists to enter the Bethesda Painting Awards. Artists must be 18 years of age or older and permanent, full-time residents of Maryland, Virginia or Washington, D.C. The selected artwork will be on exhibit in June 2026 at Gallery B in downtown Bethesda. More information and application in our bio.
