As the days grow colder and the festive season draws near, here at the Malthouse Gallery we invite you to step inside, warm up, and enjoy ALL WRAPPED UP — our annual celebration of local makers, creators and artists. A nod to both winter layers we’ve needed recently and the festive rush we all feel to get gifts and Christmas planning “all wrapped up,” this exhibition brings together the talent of more than 20 artists, makers, and creators from Lyme Regis and the local area - and celebrates them!

Featuring an inspiring mix of painting, printmaking, ceramics, textiles, jewellery and contemporary craft, the exhibition showcases the remarkable breadth of artistic practice locally. With a huge range of price points, we carefully curate ALL WRAPPED UP every year so it can offer something to every visitor - from those looking to find a special gift to standout pieces for the home — or even something for those simply wanting to enjoy inspiring art in the beautiful setting of our gallery whose charred beams are the start of so many conversations.

The exhibition is stewarded every day by the artists themselves, offering visitors the chance to meet the makers, learn about their processes and connect directly with our creative community.

Situated within the historic Town Mill complex, the Malthouse Gallery is always free to enter and free to enjoy. Whether you come for inspiration, a bit of festive cheer, or simply to escape the chill, we hope you’ll join us for a winter exhibition that really does live up to its name - in more ways than one!

We’ll be open every day from 1000-1600 until 4 January (except Christmas and Boxing Day) - and we’d love to see you!

Today we volunteered an activity for the local memory cafe (an organisation providing a social space and activities for people with dementia and their carers). We brought nature inside to the group, quite literally, in the shape of a tree branch from Anna's garden. As a group, we made extra leaves to decorate the tree, creating something visually wonderful by the end of the session.

We brought along real autumn leaves from a big range of different tree species for the group to draw around as a starting point. Everyone got involved making leaves - some were painting water onto sheets of paper that we prepared with Derwent Inktense, and watching the colour come to life. Others were colouring the leaves themselves in oil pastel and/or gouache. When each person was done, we cut out and punched a hole in each design, then strung them onto the tree branch.

It was wonderful to see how strongly the combination of nature and creativity can engage a group. It really underlines the importance of nature-based creativity for everyone, and we intend to bring this activity to other community groups in future work. Perhaps even for different seasons!

Thanks very much to the Colyton and Colyford Memory Cafe for such a lovely afternoon.

On Thursday I met up with the Art of Exploration Collective at the Royal Geographical Society in London. It was so nice to meet up, exchange stories and see and hear about latest works and projects in person. Apologies to individuals for their not very accurate likenesses(!) I defo still need to practice drawing people live. I wanted to capture the venerable feel of the room and building. We got a sneaky preview of the GeoArtBioblitz exhibition which is is on display this weekend at the Explore Festival and then I had to dash off to catch a train home. Thank you to Roseann @roseannhanson for the invite and for organising and sharing 😍 Much appreciated.

Meet Anna Brewster! Anna will be exhibiting at The Big Colyton Art Show for the first time👌

“My work is modern, expressive, and challenges the idea that watercolour can’t be exciting! I love how it flows, creating texture and colour in a unique way. Layers of pencil crayon and pastel are added over the watercolour washes to build depth and vibrancy. I love painting local landscapes and our incredible coastline, from sketches taken in the field, worked up into paintings at Umborne Bridge Studio in Colyton, where I also teach. I often give demos and offer workshops for local groups and art societies, and I will be carrying out a series of art events with Seaton Tramway this year.”

What a beautiful September morning for cutting flowers☀️ I love helping local Devon artists to have flowers that reflect their style and preferences. These are going to be fabulous for @sidmouthskies and her students to paint this weekend. Anna has a studio in #colyton next to the river. It’s a special place.

It’s the last weekend of Devon Open Studios 2025 🎨

But there's still time to discover a huge variety of art, chat with local artists, and enjoy a creative day out before we close for the year 💛

To squeeze in as much art as possible, why not call into some of our artists exhibiting as a group such as at Umborne Bridge Studio, Moorland Makers or the Art House Makers?

Check our website to find studios to visit now before it's too late!
