Currently reading Fire and Silence: A Roadmap for BIPOC Leaders by @annahid_reads

Why should BIPOC leaders read this book?

Because leadership is about more than getting a seat at the table. It’s about navigating the systems we lead within, understanding the weight of representation, finding our voice, and making space for others to lead authentically.

For those of us leading in spaces where our identities and experiences may not always be reflected, these conversations matter.

I’m looking forward to the reflections, the questions, and the lessons this book will bring.

A reminder that we can lead with both courage and authenticity, without losing ourselves in the process.

Appreciation post for author and CEO of @animaleadership @annahiddashtgard and her latest book, FIRE AND SILENCE.
I came across Annahid’s first book, Breaking the Ocean, while I was writing MUTED COLOURS and then her second book, Bones of Belonging, came out as I was finishing writing. Her writing is so insightful and compassionate, and I have quoted both books in MUTED COLOURS.
FIRE AND SILENCE came out this year and it is absolutely the book I wish I had 2 years ago! It is focused on providing real strategies for BIPOC leaders because - spoiler alert - it’s hella rough to be racialized AND be in leadership positions where most colleagues are white. She tackles tough topics and doesn’t shy away from complexity and nuance, but also shares real, concrete ways to thrive, not just survive. Annahid’s work is truly empowering - read all her books and take courses with Anima Leadership (they are amazing!).

A few days ago, we celebrated Kajé’s first birthday. 💜🎂 @kajewomen

And somehow, it felt like so much more than an anniversary.

The past few months have been heavy for many in the Iranian community. Living between two worlds, carrying grief and hope at the same time, and yet somehow, we keep showing up.

Perhaps that is the power of community, and the strength it’s giving us all.

There is something deeply healing about being surrounded by people who understand without explanation. People who share your questions, your hopes, and your dreams. People who remind you that you are not alone.

Every time I walk into a Kajé room, I feel connected to something bigger.

The laughter is louder.
The ambitions are bolder.
The possibilities feel closer.

Over the past year, Kajé has become more than a community. It has become a reminder that belonging is not something we find…it is something we create.

This week, we gathered once again to celebrate that spirit and hear from four remarkable women who reminded us of the strength, resilience, and potential of Iranian women - Dr. Sima Salahshor, Azin Asgarian, Dr. Bahareh Atoufi, and Annahid Dashgard.

Cheers to my partners in bringing Kajé to life - Nazli Bostandoust, Seti Akhavan, and Parastoo Shafiei. Thank you for believing in it when it was just a beautiful dream. For trusting its potential, pouring your hearts into it, and helping create a space that now means so much to so many women. @nazlybostandoust @parastooshafiei @seti.akhavan

To our volunteers, mentors, members, partners, and supporters: thank you for all your contributions, for continuing to show up for your community and keeping the lights on in our third home. You are the soul of this home, and what keeps it warm.

Happy Birthday, Kajé! I have a feeling this is only the beginning 💜💪🏻

Top to bottom:

1. Annahid Dashtgard - Fire and Silence: A Roadmap for BIPOC Leaders

✨️ A must read for Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour leading in institutions where systemic and interpersonal racial violence is prevalent.

2. Cyndi Dale - Transforming the Legacy: The Subtle Body Approach to Honor and Heal Your Inherited Lineage

✨️ A useful tool for transforming your inherited sense of self worth, unlocking manifestation potential, and healing your inherited wounds and distorted beliefs. Warning ⚠️ this book will MOVE things! Expect people to reach out unexpectedly, and expect to suddenly find yourself refusing to put up with the things your wounded self once tolerated.

3. Tracy Deonn - Bloodmarked: Book two in the Legendborn Cycle

✨️ Fantasy meets therapy, this book will make you feel seen if you've ever been a fish out of water, the first woman of colour in a leadership role within a white dominated institution, or the product of a secret relationship, or if you're mixed race, and possibly colonizer/ Indigenous mixed and trying to find ways to embrace the power of both of your lineages while working toward justice.

Highly recommend all three.

What are you reading? Share a Shelfie?
In love and literary vibes,

Happy reading and happy healing 💕📖

What It Costs to Be “Culture fit” at the workplace? 🤔

Maybe you've learned to be small. To be quiet. You work twice as hard and smile while doing it.

You've managed your accent, your laugh, sometimes your emotions… all to be seen as "acceptable"

This is The Good Immigrant Syndrome. 📝

It's about the psychological toll of constant assimilation, over-performance, and the relentless need for approval from people who may benefit from keeping you small.

Our guest Annahid Dashtgard @annahiddashtgard names it. She's lived it. And she's teaching us how to break the pattern.

In this conversation with our host Carol Watson, she reveals what The Good Immigrant Syndrome really costs. Why you've been performing this way. And most importantly, how to reclaim who you actually are.

If you've ever felt pressured to shrink yourself, to be "the good one," to prove your worth endlessly, this is for you. 🫶

O que Custa Ser "Aceitável" no Local de Trabalho?

Talvez tenhas aprendido a se diminuir. A silenciar. Alterar o teu sotaque, o teu riso, por vezes as tuas emoções… tudo para seres vista como "aceitável"

Bom, isto é a Síndrome do Bom Imigrante.

É sobre o custo psicológico da assimilação constante, da over-performance, e da necessidade perpétua de aprovação de pessoas que podem beneficiar de te manteres pequena.

A nossa convidada Annahid Dashtgard nomeia isto. Viveu isto.

You've probably heard it: "Culture is the shared values, the shared behaviours, the way we do things here."

Sounds nice on paper, right? But what if that culture was never built for you?

What if the entire system, the metrics, the expectations, the "meritocracy", was designed by people who looked nothing like you?

That's what Annahid Dashtgard is breaking down in this episode. She's calling out the myth of meritocracy and showing us how workplace culture becomes a trap when you're not part of the system that designed it.

Meet Annahid: CEO of @animaleadership (20+ years transforming organizational culture), founder of BIPOC Leader Lab, and bestselling author of Fire and Silence. She's spent her career helping leaders reclaim their power in systems that were never built for them.

The full conversation goes so much deeper into power, trauma, burnout, and finally, how to actually thrive.
