Navigating grief with a child whilst grieving yourself is not for the weak! They have the same questions and feelings and lack the life experience and in some cases the language to express their complex feelings.

As a parent, you think you can protect them from everything but death teaches you really quickly that that's not possible. I was told that the way I handle grief with him will become his blueprint.

I am doing my best to answer his sometimes very deep and profound questions which can sometimes be triggering and heartbreaking as I don't want him to keep these thoughts and feelings to himself. These books have been helpful for a child that loves books.

Any parents grieving themselves and holding a tiny heart as they navigate grief for themselves, I send you so much love.🫂

📚 This week’s library choice by my three year old.

🐬This Is the Girl by @robertstarling_art - I adored this book and the illustrations made me remember how fascinating sea creatures are to little people. I could see my daughter light up as she looked at all the magical creatures. Full of wonder and imagination and will spark lots of play.

♥️ The Boy, the Troll & the Chalk by @anneboothauthor and @david_c_litchfield - a magical story about friendship and creativity. Dreamy illustrations and prompted some great questions from my daughter about emotions and friendships. This would be a lovely circle time choice.

🌙 I Can’t Sleep by @emmafarrarons - Both my girls loved this story about the struggle to get ready for sleep. I loved that it also drew on the warmth and comfort that siblings find in each other.

My girls were thrilled to complete the summer reading challenge this week and receive their medals. It’s really motivated them to explore lots of wonderful new books. 🏅

It can be tricky knowing how to tackle big feelings with young children, but there are so many amazing resources to support teachers introducing the topic to their classes. Here are a selection of some of our favourite books about emotions, all of which you can request from us here at ELS.

❤️ If we want boys to grow into men who can recognise, understand and communicate their emotions, we have to give them opportunities to learn those skills early.

One of the simplest ways I’ve found to do that is through picture books.

As a dad to three boys and a social, emotional and mental health teacher, I’ve seen how stories create space.

A character’s anger becomes a way to talk about our own.

A story about worry makes it easier to say, “I’ve felt like that too.”

The books in this carousel are about helping them understand that every emotion has a place, and that feelings become much easier to manage when we have the words for them.

Which picture book has helped your child make sense of a big feeling?

🎁 📚 Teacher Gifts 📚 🎁

Littlest kid finishes his second year of primary school on Thursday, and this is the lovely stack of books we are giving to his teachers, for their Year One classroom. Like many primary schools these days, they don’t have a dedicated librarian, or even a library, so this collection will be much appreciated 📚 🎁

Sometimes the books bring us joy and at other times they help us start important conversations.

After losing a family member recently, I’m adding these books to the collection to help us explore loss, grief and celebrating the lives of loved ones gone too soon.

I’m so grateful for the authors who are helping us to find the words 🤍

👁️‍🗨️ Kimse Bakmazken Duygular Ne Yapar?

Seguono tracce invisibili.
Abitano nelle storie senza sapere cosa stanno cercando.
