🫰🤖🏺💫🫰…Recently, I had the major honor of organizing the exhibition “Glitch/craft” which opened January 22nd in the Vulcan Materials Gallery @vulcanmaterials at Alabama School of Fine Arts. Special thanks goes out to my incredible wife, Anne Herbert @annerherbert and the artists who traveled to be a part of this event. The show includes the following super talented and inspiring digital ceramic gurus: Audrey An @audrey.an Eliza Au @eliza_au Jackie Brown @j_a_c_k_i_e_b_r_o_w_n Bryan Czibes @zibes Julianna Dougherty @juliannadoughertyart Tasha Lewis @tashalewisartist Wade MacDonald @wmacd.art Jennifer Masley @jennifermasleyclay Mark Meier @mkmra2 Fallon Navarro @fallon_navarro Nik Putnam @nik.ceramics Ellen Schön @ellenschonceramics Glitch/craft brings together a group of artists whose collaborative foundations were formed at the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts during the Digital Clay residency. The exhibition explores the productive tension between ancient ceramic traditions and emerging digital technologies, presenting 3D-printed clay and mixed-media works that foreground both precision and unpredictability. While united by a shared period of collaboration and experimentation, each artist approaches digital tools through a distinct personal vision. For some, computation functions as a method of formal generation; for others, it serves as a means of disruption, translation, or critique. These varied approaches result in a wide range of material outcomes—structural, expressive, speculative, and process-driven—demonstrating that digital clay is not a singular aesthetic but a plural and evolving field. Installed at the Alabama School of Fine Arts, Glitch/craft highlights ceramics as a hybrid practice rooted in communal knowledge-sharing and experimentation. The exhibition reflects the residency’s emphasis on mini-tutorials, shared problem-solving, and open-source exchange, extending those values into the gallery space. Together, the works present a diverse and innovative cross-section of contemporary ceramic practice, proposing new possibilities for how digital and material processes can coexist within the future of the field. . 🤖💙🤖

Anne Herbert HORIZONS On view through Jan. 5th Anne Herbert is a painter and educator living in Birmingham, Alabama. Anne received her BFA in Painting from the University of Montevallo in 2007 and her MFA from the University of Alabama in 2013. Anne teaches in the Visual Art Department at the Alabama School of Fine Arts, where she also serves as director for the Vulcan Materials Gallery. Anne exhibits regularly throughout the Southeast, and her recent activities include Homily for a Pink Moon, a two-person exhibition at the Gadsden Museum of Art, A Clean, Well-Lighted Place, a group exhibition at Nature Of Things in Dallas, TX and Ways of the Circle, a solo exhibition at Room 412 in Birmingham, AL in 2024. ARTIST STATEMENT My painting process is an act of searching and experimentation, which inherently involves both loss and discovery. Paying close attention to the unique occurrences, I work in a reactive way that allows each painting to develop along its own path. The pace allows the paintings to bear witness to the day-to-day. My experiences, environment and emotions emerge as form, figure and color. It is a constant act of tuning into the present moment, with all of its messiness and contradictions, and coming face-to-face with the imperfection of my marks, gestures and choices. In this act of self-acceptance, I locate myself. Such gestures, sustained over time, ground me within the cycles of my life. They become the visual manifestation of my connection to the world, to my own experiences and to the recurrent experience of being.
