At the foot of a vineyard in Werder, Brandenburg, HAIN explores what it means for architecture to become part of an ecosystem rather than simply occupy one.
Designed by Christian Cotting, Hannes Herbst, Emily Schlatter, Jakob Wolters and Jurek Brüggen, the project extends an existing grove through a restrained language of timber, fieldstone and earth. Local, undried larch forms the structural framework, while reclaimed Feldsteine create a layered, porous envelope—one designed to evolve as lichens, plants and wildlife gradually inhabit its surfaces.
Inside, clay, rammed earth and thermal mass establish a stable, tactile interior for wine storage, while reversible construction anticipates future adaptation.
Could architecture be measured not only by what it shelters, but by what it enables to flourish?
