A few thank yous from me. Firstly, all the people who've bought and read my novels, it means the world to hear that a reader has enjoyed my writing. Thank you also to the writing community, the best there is, who have cheered me on from the beginning. A special thank you to my wonderful writing group VWG!

Big, big thank you to editors Rosie Shackles and Anne Meadows at Picador, both truly wonderful people who understood my vision and helped me bring it to life. Thanks also to wider team at Picador, from design to distribution. What a publisher!

And last but most certainly not least, thank you to Shouma Khan, who has tirelessly supported me in writing my 'difficult second book'. As I said in my acknowledgements, the ultimate main character. I love you with all my heart.

London, 1941.

As the city thrums with Blitz bombers, lonely air raid warden Ruby is drawn into the unfamiliar world of the India Forum, where a group of Londoners are working tirelessly to free India from British rule.

Ruby has her own secret motives for joining the fight, but when she meets Satyajit, charming, aloof, and potentially dangerous, she finds herself torn between head and heart.

Lawyer Kitty is helping Indian men in Britain challenge conscription. Having left her family behind in Bombay to marry the man she loves, now she risks losing him as well.

As Kitty and Ruby’s lives collide, the threat of violence closes in. Just how far are they willing to go for the people they love?

'Thrilling... A love story of intellect and passion.'
The brilliant Stephanie Sy-Quia is one of the eight 'Best Debut Novelists 2026' as chosen by The Observer. This annual feature unfailingly identifies, celebrates and shares outstanding talent and this year is is no exception, and it is wonderful to see Stephanie part of this exciting group with her novel A PRIVATE MAN.

Out from @picadorbooks on 19th Feb, A PRIVATE MAN has already garnered fantastic support from fellow writers:

‘Truly outstanding: clever, passionate and as clean as a bone’ Melissa Harrison

‘A rich, elegant and textured novel full of quiet, beautiful revolutions, which sparks with erotic friction. A Private Man is a brilliant debut about secrets and belief, about the collision of lives, and about the liberation of being remade’ Seán Hewitt

'Sy-Quia writes beautifully and energetically about faith and food and clothes and sex. Her prose embraces beauty and her characters are complex and compelling. It’s a rare pleasure to read this novel' Sarah Moss

'A luminous, deeply thoughtful and moving love story. Breathtakingly honest and true on sex, on art, on the analogy between religious and corporeal pleasure, A Private Man is also a meditation on care, faith, doubt and loss. A beautiful and wise novel'
Luke Kennard

‘A warm, tender novel, written with such beauty and precision that it frequently stopped me in my tracks. I read it slowly, carefully, marvelling at an image, savouring each glint and turn’ Alex Hyde

‘Stephanie Sy-Quia's novel takes the truly singular story of a truly singular soul and makes it into something approachable, understandable and familiar. This is a novel brimming with empathy, tenderness and wisdom’
Aidan Cottrell-Boyce

Harris House was packed for the third annual Literature in Time (LiT) Conference! Students in Dr. Katie Fleishman’s honors senior English class organized, hosted, and moderated the four-hour event on Sunday. They selected 12 student essays on authors like Zora Neale Hurston, T.S. Eliot, and Mary Shelley to read during panels on facade, form, and friction. Keynote speaker Anne Meadows, publishing director at Picador Books, addressed the crowd to end the evening and focused on the three major steps of publishing: acquisition, editing, and release.

The LiT Conference is graciously supported by the Class of 1963 English Endowment and the Richard P. Towne ’17 Lecture Fund.

🖼️ - 𝑳𝒆𝒕 𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝒚𝒐𝒖, 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒌 𝒊𝒔 𝒂𝒏 𝒂𝒃𝒔𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒕𝒆 𝒈𝒆𝒎! From the moment I started reading, I was hooked. The multi-dimensional storyline had me completely captivated.

The Book, with its full-cast narration, added an extra layer of depth to the characters' perspectives. I especially loved how the story unfolded through three distinct points of view, each revealing secrets and unraveling mysteries in their way.

Congratulations to the 2022 Brick Lane Bookshop Short Story Prize Shortlistees!

Imogen Fox, Emily Gaywood-James, Giovanna Iozzi, Bonnie Lander Johnson, Max Lury, & Martha Sprackland.

Many thanks to our judges Anne Meadows, Huma Qureshi and Chris Wellbelove, the decision making process was incredibly tough.

Here's what the judges said about the entire longlist:

‘The BLB SSP longlist is testament to the breadth and imagination of a new generation of writers, and the elasticity of the short-story form. We read stories that were funny, sexy, deeply sad, and very strange. We read them not knowing a thing about their authors, finding ourselves amazed again and again by the talent on display. It’s a wonderful list.’ Anne Meadows

‘Exceptional stories, each so startlingly different, yet all stay with you. A true celebration of the short-story form.’
Huma Qureshi

‘The stories on this longlist showcase the range and excitement of the form – read them for their invention and imagination, and for their abilities to move, surprise and amuse.’ Chris Wellbelove

The winners will be announced at the book launch, late Oct/early Nov, date TBC.
