one year in. And the first cycle of experimentation at the Architectural Association completed. Truly proud by what emerged this year

Kiss the Dirt, in Mutual Decline, Ashes to Ashes Dust to Dusk, Act of Hidden Works, Wait Awhile, Wandering Woman, In Search of Ghosts, Capitale Diplomatique, and We’re Going on a Bear Hunt were among the projects that formed a body of research around the twincondition this year.

Thank you to the trust of the first cohort of students we had, and for the research and work they produced.

Thank you, too, Emily Priest, best teaching partner.

And to the family of artists, architects, makers and writers who supported us: Farrokh Aman, George Massoud, Giles Tettey Nartey, Nana Biamah-Ofosu, Annika Thiems, Ibiye Camp, Dan Pope, Jonathan Howard, Caroline Pepper, Silvana Taher, Richard Aina, Jonah Luswata and Jürgen Benson-strohmayer

Méret Oppenheim, Parapapillonneries, 1976, Portfolio of six colour-lightographs and captions by André Pieyre de Mandiargues, on Arches paper, Edition 35/100 (+ XX AP), Each 46.5 x 59 cm | 18 x 23 ¼ in.

Bartha Contemporary is delighted to present Annika Thiems’s exhibition ‘On wings (or almost)’, on view from 5 March to 5 April 2026. Conceived in response to Méret Oppenheim’s print portfolio ‘Parapapillonneries’ (1976), the exhibition unfolds as an inquiry into absurdity, surrealism, and psychoanalytic thought.

Fifty years after the publication of Parapapillonneries, this new body of work echoes the butterflies’ refusal of prettiness and coherence, their insistence on individuality and contradiction. Oppenheim’s radical legacy, shaped through a rejection of expectation and obedience, forms a critical lineage for Thiems’s practice.
