It’s the mid-1980s and Massimo Osti’s team is in the US digging through a militaria collector’s house when a small white box turns up, labelled “Goggles: Dark Adaption Type E-1”. Inside is a ruby red acetate visor with finely finished edges.

The red was key. Your eyes run on cones for daylight and colour, but the rods for night vision. Despite only needing a few photons it can take 20 to 30 minutes of pure darkness to regenerate their pigment, called rhodopsin. Rods are blind to deep red while cones handle it fine so, application to militaria was developed. As we know, Massimo Osti took these military adaptations and ran with them.

A pilot in the briefing room could walk around, read flight maps and check instruments all while his rods were convinced it was already dark, thus adapting before he stepped outside.

Back in Italy, Osti decided to try building this visor into a garment. After many attempts at finding a suitable maker, the team landed on Baruffaldi and pitched it straight to owner Dino. However, the raw acetate edges cut the skin, so the visor got a straddle-mounted tape edge. Secondly, metal snaps tore the acetate until small rubber washers went between the two halves. Problem solved.

The design in recent years has become one of the most coveted pieces ever, with Supreme using the visors twice, starting in 2020. C.P. also went back to Baruffaldi in 2008, for adjustable, removable goggles too.

Nowadays, the original Osti pieces fetch thousands and are heralded as possibly the most sought after silhouette as I’m writing this.
