Last week I was taken on a total wine adventure—and it was wild!
We kicked things off with a glass of Champagne, always a good start @champagnejeromeblin
But the focus of the night was on the Spanish region of Ribera del Duero. One of the places I am excited to discover when I visit in October.
We were taken on an incredible journey and tasted 10 wines from two visionary producers.
I wasn't sure what to expect, but it felt like we were rewinding to pre-1982, before the DO was established.
Before everyone was forced to focus solely on Tempranillo. The time before growers actually ripped out old vines—especially the whites—just to plant more Tempranillo.
The producers we tasted are among a rare handful saving these 100+ year old vineyards. They are bringing back traditional, elegant styles, field blends and putting the native Albillo Mayor white grape back on the map.

We tasted 10 bottles in total:
*Two whites made from Albillo Mayor
*Three Claretes, an historic Spanish wine where red and white grapes co-ferment to make a textural and savoury style Rosé
*Five Red field blends
There is not enough space to write about them all, but these two blew me away

2021 Bendito Destino La Cabaña- a tiny 0.38 hectare vineyard high up at 925 metres. A traditional field blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Valenciano, Albillo, Alarije and Pirulés. Aged for two years and they only made 550 bottles!

2018 Dominio del Águila Peñas Aladas Gran Reserva - 100+ year old vines a beautiful field blend of Tempranillo with local red and white varieties. Co- fermented in concrete, aged for 53 months in oak.
This is the first time a bottle of this wine has been opened at a public event here in Australia 🙌

D Division, where this event took place, was initially the female jail, but later the maximum security area where 11 executions took place.
Many of the blue stone buildings still standing are now Heritage Listed.
A piece of history close to my home, and a great venue for this event @anotherbottle__
