When Darien and I were just dating, I would dream of what it would look like to build a life we’re proud of. So many of those dreams included what our everyday life looks like now. Allow me to introduce you to Anthony Gansäuer. 📸🫶🏿

He’ll be taking your portraits at CHURCH. So yes, babes, come FLY.

Anthony is a documentary and editorial photographer based right here in Greenville. His work explores the people, places, and cultural identities of the American South. He works primarily with film and makes prints by hand in his own darkroom.

For me, having portraits made is about archiving this work. Black history lives in the spaces we create, the ways we gather, the clothes we wear, and the people who show up. I want there to be a record of what we’re building here. Of our joy, our creativity, our presence in this place and time.

Coming home to South Carolina and creating these gatherings is part of my story. When you come sit at the table, your story becomes part of it, too. That deserves to be documented and remembered.

On October 25, come eat, sing, fellowship, and let Anthony make your portrait. We were here, babes. Let’s leave a record.

Artistry in action 📸🎞️✨ What an amazing Saturday it was in this shop! We LOVED having @anthonygansauer and team today…Anthony originally approached us and had a vision for a film photography shoot in the shop, and we loved seeing it all unfold with this talented team! Each member brought their own talents and contributions, and we were so impressed with their excitement, talent, artistry, vision, and respectful use of the shop! We can’t wait to see the final work from this talented group!

It makes us really excited to see a younger generation enjoying and appreciating the beauty and artistry of antiques and fine art as well! 🖼️

Archival: me at 26. 🪷

I’ve never actually sat for a formal portrait but I found the fleeting intimacy of connection between subject and artist so fascinating. Portraits can feel so vulnerable since there’s really nowhere to hide or no scene to fade into. I found myself feeling very out of my comfort zone which is so wild since I spend so much of my time on or behind a camera.

But @anthonygansauer’s work feels rich and storybook-like, which is the same way I feel about @sriiramesh’s music. I highly recommend checking out both.

It was so fun to have this little moment at @kavaculturespartanburg today :)
