POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Knowing when you use your voice and creating space for someone else’s. Thats what reclaiming the narrative is all about. Stories are ALL of ours to tell. The ones that have the biggest impact are always shared.

Photography is one of the most powerful tools we have for storytelling. It captures moments that live far beyond when they were taken. Images have the power to make us see, feel, question and, sometimes, act.

One of the most meaningful stories I’ve had the opportunity to document was the October 2024 peaceful protests in Kilifi, captured in what I’m calling the “Sitaki Nuclear” series.

What happened in Kilifi was, in my view, one of the greatest environmental wins in Kenya’s recent history.

But this story is about more than a nuclear power plant. It is about people coming together to say “we don’t want this” and exercising their right to ask for something better.

The community raised its concerns, a petition was taken to the council, and their voices were heard. The proposed nuclear plant was subsequently moved to another location with less environmental impact.

These photographs document a moment when ordinary people stood together for what they believed in. A reminder that communities have a voice, that environmental protection can begin with simply speaking up, and that when we don’t want something, we have the right to ask for better.

Over the coming year, I intend to share one photograph from the “Sitaki Nuclear” series every month, revisiting the people, moments and emotions behind this story.

Because photography allows us to witness.
To remember.
To question.
And to document the moments when people choose to stand up and ask for better

The future of Africa cannot be built by forgetting its past.

At Dunia, we believe our elders are living libraries, guardians of stories, traditions, languages, wisdom, and ways of seeing the world that have sustained communities for generations.

Our Centre for African Indigenous Knowledge is dedicated to preserving, protecting, and celebrating this sacred heritage. More than a place of learning, it is a space where generations meet, culture is lived, and where everyone is invited to connect with the richness and diversity of Africa’s knowledge systems.

The #Turkana people remind us that ceremonies are more than celebrations, they are living stories

Through song, dance, dress, and ritual, generations have passed down knowledge that could never be contained in books. Every movement, every feather, every bead, and every rhythm carries stories of identity, resilience, community, and a deep connection to the land.

For the Turkana, ceremonies mark life’s milestones, strengthen social bonds, honour ancestors, and preserve traditions that have endured for centuries in one of Kenya’s most remarkable landscapes.

At Dunia Enkop, we believe that protecting culture is inseparable from protecting nature. When ceremonies continue to be celebrated, languages, knowledge systems, and communities continue to thrive.

Our heritage is not a relic of the past—it is a living legacy.

Conferences, conservation and commute, all in the same loop this year.

A keynote and panel at Princeton. A lecture at the University of Zurich. A panel in Munich on moving physical monitoring infrastructure from pilot to industrial scale. Then back to the field: new deployments in Laikipia supporting Space for Giants at Suyian Conservancy, and down in Narok laying the groundwork for the heritage park at Oldonyo Rasha with Dunia Enkop.

Different rooms, same work.

I’ve been struggling to find the words for what being at @pwffest meant to me. I don’t think a million posts could do it justice.
People talk about finding their community, but I don’t think I truly understood what that felt like until I arrived in Kenya.
For most of my life, conservation has felt pretty lonely. Not because I haven’t been surrounded by wonderful people, but because being a young conservationist in Pakistan can be SO isolating. You're constantly explaining why wildlife matters, why education matters, why stories matter.
Then I came to PWFF and suddenly I was surrounded by people who already understood. No justifications needed, everyone was on the same page.
Filmmakers, photographers, conservationists, storytellers, artists. People from different countries, different backgrounds, different ecosystems. And yet somehow we were all speaking the same language. It felt less like attending a festival and more like coming home. There was something incredibly powerful about being in a space where African conservation stories were being told by African voices, where difficult conversations were welcomed, where people cared deeply not just about wildlife but about people, culture, community and belonging.

I arrived expecting to learn. I left with new friendships, new perspectives, and so much joy that my heart is literally bursting at the seams.
Also hope, The kind of hope that comes from realising there are so many people out there doing the work, telling the stories, and refusing to give up.
Thank you, @pwffest , for creating a space where people like me can find each other, for breathing life back into me.

I met so many incredible people, but I have some honourable mentions: @fionatande , @my.eye__00 , @theoriginsfoundation , @francisco.galeazzi , @dante_galeazzi , @projectdelight , @reel_with_nusrat , @anthonymbogori , @abdulrahman_abel , @tee_the_wildlife_kid
Thank you for being my chosen family, and changing my perspective in ways you may never understand. I left a huge chunk of my heart in Kenya, where it will always remain

Some places change the way you think, some places change the way you see yourself
This one somehow did both 🫶🏽✨️🇰🇪

Taking the first steps from Nature Guide to Trails Guide.

This week, students began logging their first observer hours and encounters on the path toward achieving their Apprentice Trails Guide status.
Along the way, they developed essential skills in encounter management, wildlife tracking and trailing, as well as foundational bush survival techniques, building both confidence and valuable field experience.

It’s been an incredible and rewarding week, filled with memorable encounters and driven by a group of passionate individuals all working towards their FGASA Apprentice Trails Guide qualification.

Keep pushing forward, this is just the beginning!
