Happy Mazingira Day, Kenya, and Happy Global Birding Day!

Big up Kenya! 🇰🇪 3rd in the world so far on Global Birding Day’s Species Leaders board, with 539 species recorded as of 10 October 2026!

A huge thank you to @arochakenya for introducing me to the world of birding. The more I learn, the more mind-blowing it becomes. From the colours and calls to the incredible diversity of species around us, there is so much to see, understand and appreciate.

Hell’s Kitchen, is a dramatic sandstone canyon in Kilifi County, roughly 40 km inland from Malindi. Carved over time by wind and water erosion, its layers of red, orange, white and yellow sandstone form a landscape that feels almost otherworldly. Locally known as Nyari, meaning “the place that broke itself.” 🌍🇰🇪

Knowing when you use your voice and creating space for someone else’s. Thats what reclaiming the narrative is all about. Stories are ALL of ours to tell. The ones that have the biggest impact are always shared.

First time I saw a Kori bustard I wasn’t quite sure what it was I was seeing. I almost had to blink a couple extra times to make sure it was real😅. I was in the greater Amboselli region . I asked out loud what is that?!?

Felix from @greatplainsfoundation told me it was a Kori bustard and that it’s one of the heaviest flying birds. It blew my mind that I had never heard of it. It was a majestic sighting and haven’t seen too many since. Can’t wait to see one in flight. by @anthonymbogori

Photography is one of the most powerful tools we have for storytelling. It captures moments that live far beyond when they were taken. Images have the power to make us see, feel, question and, sometimes, act.

One of the most meaningful stories I’ve had the opportunity to document was the October 2024 peaceful protests in Kilifi, captured in what I’m calling the “Sitaki Nuclear” series.

What happened in Kilifi was, in my view, one of the greatest environmental wins in Kenya’s recent history.

But this story is about more than a nuclear power plant. It is about people coming together to say “we don’t want this” and exercising their right to ask for something better.

The community raised its concerns, a petition was taken to the council, and their voices were heard. The proposed nuclear plant was subsequently moved to another location with less environmental impact.

These photographs document a moment when ordinary people stood together for what they believed in. A reminder that communities have a voice, that environmental protection can begin with simply speaking up, and that when we don’t want something, we have the right to ask for better.

Over the coming year, I intend to share one photograph from the “Sitaki Nuclear” series every month, revisiting the people, moments and emotions behind this story.

Because photography allows us to witness.
To remember.
To question.
And to document the moments when people choose to stand up and ask for better

Conservation begins with hope, and hope grows through education.

Environmental education is more than teaching about nature it’s about giving the next generation the knowledge, confidence and opportunity to care for the world around them. When families are empowered to understand their environment, they can become part of its protection and restoration.
