Coming Home | FUZE 2026 🇧🇸

Man, it feels good to be home! Being with family, making memories, and seeing their reactions to my artwork means so much to me. Reconnecting with family, friends, and people who helped me become the artist I am today is really special. A beautiful reminder of where I come from, how far I’ve come, and where I’m going.

Moments from my first days back home…

1. With Aunt Donna in front of Where the Ocean Meets the Sand, my 2019 Baha Mar residency/commission.

2. A delightful conversation with a beautiful Bahamian woman on my flight home.

3. Settling into my room at Grand Hyatt Baha Mar, with beautiful ocean views.

4. So awesome running into fellow Atlanta artist Ahad Pace, who is visiting Nassau with his family!

5. Welcomed home by my brother Carl Blades and niece Carlesha.

6. Twinning with my niece!

7. Precious time with my 95 year old aunt/mom, Violet Ellis, who raised me from birth.

8. Family reunion with Aunt Donna, cousin Sophia, Carl, and Carlesha.

9. An evening with Aunt Donna at the Swimming Pig, Baha Mar.

10. More time with cousin Sophia.

11. Making ourselves right at home!

12. A quiet morning, tea, and reflection.

13. Ready to explore!

14. A splash of Bahamian color at Baha Mar.

15. Reconnecting with my professor and mentor, Antonius Roberts, who founded the FINCO Summer Art Workshop I attended in 1991. I later studied with him at the College of the Bahamas. He and Brent Malone organized an art auction to help fund my studies at SCAD Savannah. Forever grateful! Now we’re exhibiting together at FUZE!

16. Catching up with Bahamian artists Blue Curry, Gio Swaby and Stephen Schmidt at Café Blu.

17. One last photo with Gio and Stephen before heading out!

18. Our FUZE 2026 artist passes. Let the festivities begin!

Grateful to be home and excited to share my work at FUZE Caribbean Art Fair, October 21–25. 🇧🇸❤️

ART BEYOND THE BOOTH.

At FUZE Caribbean Art Fair 2026: Coming Home, art extends beyond traditional exhibition spaces, inviting visitors to encounter contemporary Caribbean creativity in new and unexpected ways.

Building on the success of previous editions, this year’s expanded installation programme brings together six installations by seven artists, transforming the FUZE Pavilion into a space for discovery, experimentation, and meaningful engagement.

Through ambitious approaches to material, form, and space, these presentations reflect the diversity of contemporary artistic practices across the Caribbean and its diaspora, offering experiences that move beyond the conventional art fair booth.

Meet the artists shaping this year’s installation programme:

I1 — Matthew David Rahming @macchu_thelesser
I2 — Charles Campbell @charlescampbellart
I3 — Lillian Blades @lillianblades
I4 — Antonius Roberts @antoniusroberts
I5 — Dede Brown & Finn Modder @dbrowntheartist @finn.modder
I6 — Jason Bennett @jason_ayer_bennett

Some things are better experienced in person. Swipe to meet the artists, then join us at FUZE to discover what they’ve created.

This Saturday, October 17, in the @unesco International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Intangible heritage is knowledge that lives in people: songs, crafts, festivals, and ways of making that communities carry and pass on. It is also where some of the most important teaching happens.
My doctoral research looked at creative non-formal art education in Nassau, The Bahamas, through two lenses. At Arlene Nash Ferguson’s Educulture Junkanoo Museum, and in the Junkanoo shacks, knowledge moves through hands, watching, repetition, and relationships between makers. At Antonius Roberts’ I.C.E. (Incubator for Collaborative Expression), I saw how those same ways of learning carry into contemporary art practice, shaping how artists gather, collaborate, and mentor today.
Together they changed how I think about what a classroom is, who counts as a teacher, and whose knowledge our institutions are built to recognise.
That question follows me into my work in education. When we design programs that send students into other communities, the most valuable learning often sits outside formal structures. Our job is to approach it with respect, reciprocity, and the humility to be taught.
On Saturday I’m grateful to the people who keep these practices alive, and mindful of how much higher education still has to learn from them.

Our Chickcharney collaborators.
Carlito Catalano, dancer and choreographer.

Self taught from a screen in primary school, trained since 2020 by an Odissi master, now telling an Andros story in a language from Odisha.

Kevin Iega Jeff, movement consultant. Juilliard, JUBILATION!, and thirty years of Deeply Rooted Dance Theater in Chicago.

Antonius Roberts, host of the 8 October premiere at I.C.E., and also creator of a monumental sculpture of the same name.

For Bahamian artist Antonius Roberts, FUZE Caribbean Art Fair creates opportunities for artists to engage with space in ways that extend beyond the traditional art fair experience.

At FUZE 2025, the fair was intentional about creating spaces throughout the pavilion and inviting artists to transform them—allowing for installations and artistic interventions that shaped how audiences moved through and experienced the fair.

This approach reflects Roberts’ own longstanding engagement with art, environment and place, and the possibilities that emerge when artists are given the space to respond, experiment and create.

With the generous support of Sherwin-Williams Bahamas, artists were able to bring these spaces to life, helping FUZE create an environment shaped by the artists and practices represented throughout the region.

As we look ahead to FUZE 2026: Coming Home, we’re excited to expand these opportunities, creating more space for installation, experimentation and ambitious artistic interventions throughout the fair.

Hear from Antonius as he reflects on FUZE 2025, the transformation of its spaces and the support that helped make it possible.

Our opening night has a host, and it matters who he is.

Antonius Roberts has spent forty years making room for other people’s work. He taught at Government High School and lectured at what is now the University of The Bahamas. He ran the FINCO Summer Art Workshops. He started Junior Junkanoo in 1983. He helped bring the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas into being and curated the Central Bank gallery for most of its life.

And he kept mentoring. Jodi Minnis-Rolle, now Curatorial Director at the NAGB, came up through those rooms. So did Heino Schmid, Angelika Wallace-Whitfield, and a long line of others still working today.

In 2019 he took on a derelict warehouse and turned it into I.C.E, the Incubator for Collaborative Expression. Studios, a garden, solar power, residencies, and young artists with somewhere to go.

On 8 October a self taught Bahamian dancer premieres a new work in that building. That is not an accident. That is what the building is for.
