Anupa Gardner won a Jackson’s Choice Award in Jackson’s Art Prize 2026 with her work ‘Keeper of Plants’. In this interview, she discusses her love of the tactile nature of printmaking and the physical connection she has with the process, how she attempts to bring the loose energy of working with oil pastels into print, and how each day begins with looking after her cat. New nib! I have been wanting this one for years, ogling it every time I went to beautiful Regensburg and its excellent art shop Farben-Eckert, but i’m sometimes a bit daft with the ‘do I really need it’ kind of thing. (it was less than 2 euros, COME ON! If I’d still be working at @greyfriarsartshop I would have told myself to just buy it already!- @moragdonkin and @frazballs always said I could be persuasive with hesitant customers 🙈).
Anyway, maybe helped by the presence of @anupa.gardner and @c.a.hiley , this time I grabbed one, and here it is, so satisfyingly helping with my #soyuz print.
That the ‘transparent pinkish orange’ layer being drawn. Stay tuned for some manic printing action.
This double print is the last part of the ‘big horse’ series, a project funded by @federation_wallonie_bruxelles (thank you and gratitude to FWB). If it all goes well, it’ll be on the walls at @la_grande_ourse_liege from the 19 august ( oooo it’s a bit soon!).

Three of Anupa Gardner’s vibrantly colourful woodcut prints hang together, currently on display at the @royal_scottish_academy as part of their exhibition Chaos & Control. These beautiful and detailed prints are the result of many layers of reduction woodcut printing. She uses large sheets of wood: it is a very physical process.

Anupa is a Studio Member and a tutor at Edinburgh Printmakers, and was formerly a print technician. She was born in India and has been based in Scotland for many years. After graduating from Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology, India, where she studied graphic design, she received an MA from Edinburgh College of Art in 2008.

Her work is driven by an engagement with materiality, tactility, and the relationships that emerge through making, and evolves through a continual dialogue with ink, paper and image, responding intuitively until the final form emerges.

Chaos & Control: Printmaking in Scotland Today runs until 26 July at the Royal Scottish Academy and is free to enter. This beautifully curated exhibition features a number of printmakers from the Edinburgh Printmakers' community.

Congratulations to our lovely and talented tutor Morven @morven.printandpress on her magnificent print, featured in the current @rsa exhibition, Chaos and Control.

It’s a beautifully curated show and Morven’s work is certainly a highlight along with the outstanding pieces by Anupa @anupa.gardner.

What a privilege it is to have both of these amazing printmakers working in the Birchwood. Not only are they full of talent, knowledge and experience but they are also both very excellent and kind humans. Thank you lovely ladies, you are inspirational.

Here’s my little taster of Chaos & Control: Printmaking in Scotland Now — currently on at the @royal_scottish_academy and running until 26 July.

I feel incredibly honoured and proud to have two of my etchings included alongside so many talented and renowned artists. It really is a fantastic celebration of the breadth, diversity and creativity of contemporary printmaking in Scotland.

Many thanks to @adeadesina and Flora La Thangue for inviting me to be part of this beautifully curated exhibition, and for bringing together such an inspiring collection of work. The show is one of the most exciting and inspiring exhibitions I’ve ever seen, never mind having the pleasure of being part of! It’s been an absolute privilege to be involved.

If you’re interested in printmaking, creativity, or simply want to experience the incredible range of work being produced by printmakers across Scotland, I’d highly recommend a visit. It’s a must-see!

Even with three weeks off, it's going to be another busy month! We have 2 workshops and 2 paint & wine events planned along with starting a new term!

Spring is in full swing, why not try something new now that hibernation season is over? Experience some nature themed sound baths and scultpure classes, immerse yourself in the art of repetitive mark making with Raphie's Mindfulness class or Anupa's Lino cutting course or get your art fix on a Tuesday with Morven! If you only have a day available, why not join Hayley in her landscape themed workshop to soak in all the new greens nature is providing us with!

We look forward to seeing you all soon!
