"Mathare is in danger of a 'single story' and as a girl from there, you have to have resilience to change your story". ~ Victoria Anyango Ochieng, CMETrust PSS Scholar, Davidson College, speaking at Rise and Thrive, an event co-organised by Aga Khan Foundation Canada and Canada-Mathare Education Trust on May 30, 2024 focusing on innovative approaches, challenges, and triumphs in promoting educational access for girls, in East Africa and beyond.

Last week, Bonner Scholar Victoria Ochieng '27 participated in a panel discussion at Rise and Thrive: Empowering East African Youth through Education. It was organized by the Agha Khan Foundation Canada and the Canada-Mathare Education Trust. The aim was to explore innovative approaches, challenges, and triumphs in promoting educational access for girls in East Africa and beyond. The panel included Cheryl Urban, Assistant Deputy Minister for Sub-Saharan Africa at Global Affairs Canada; Jane Rarieya, Dean of the Institute for Educational Development, East Africa (IED-EA); and Jennifer Elms, Regional Gender Equality Advisor for North America at the Aga Khan Foundation Canada. During Victoria's visit, she also engaged with board members, volunteers, and supporters of the Canada Mathare Education Trust in a Q&A session. They discussed life in Mathare and how education is a powerful tool for breaking the vicious cycle of generational poverty in the community.

"A key takeaway from these experiences was the importance of storytelling in advocacy. While on the panel, I shared my personal experiences and observations. Though my story may not represent all youths in East Africa, I know it resonated with many. As young people, we often shy away from opportunities that put us in the spotlight and engage leaders in critical discussions. However, real change requires both action and words. It's vital to tell our stories and seek opportunities to share our ideas. I left Canada enriched with new perspectives, connections, and valuable insights into non-profit leadership and the efforts required to create inclusive education for young people in East Africa. I am eager to implement my learnings as I continue advocating for empowering young people through equitable education." - Victoria Ochieng

This summer, Victoria is also participating in the @davidsoncollege Research in Science Experience and working on a community project in her village called Winjo Teens4Teens in collaboration with the Child Space Organization.

You are currently facing the task of moderating a panel discussion at a program launch and feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. As the event approaches, your anxiety increases, and you worry about the different responsibilities of keeping the discussion on track, ensuring all panelists have equal speaking time, and answering questions from the audience.

Despite your fears, you take a deep breath and step onto the stage to begin the panel discussion. Initially, you feel a bit shaky, stumbling over words and struggling to maintain the conversation's flow— you even forget your favorite color and out of nowhere stumble on black😂

However, as the discussion progresses, you become more confident and start to enjoy the experience. You discover your natural talent in anticipating panelists' responses and asking insightful follow-up questions that keep the discussion engaging.

As the panel discussion draws to a close, you feel proud and energized for taking on the challenge. You realize that you had overcame your fears and developed a new skill set, which you could apply to other areas of your life.

This was my #WezeshaKike launch experience and I appreciate all the guests and panelists who made this evening a success.
Congratulations @CMETrust this is a milestone towards creating a gender equitable Mathare
