📜 Why Is There a Khufu Cartouche at Tanis? 🧐 And Did Ramesses Try to Rewrite History?

At Tanis, I stumbled upon something UNUSUAL… A cartouche of Khufu, the legendary builder of the Great Pyramid, appears alongside carvings of Ramses II. 🤯 But here’s the kicker — it looks like Ramses may have carved over the original inscription. Why would he do that? Was he trying to connect himself to Khufu’s legacy, or even claim credit for his achievements?

Historians and archaeologists have debated this practice — reinscribing monuments to rewrite history. It raises BIG questions about how ancient rulers shaped the past (and our understanding of it). Could this be more evidence that pharaohs borrowed legitimacy by carving their names over earlier kings? 👑

Back in 2022, we all felt a pang of sadness when some of the magical fairy chimneys in Cappadocia were lost due to highway construction. But fear not, the enchanting landscape of Cappadocia is still thriving with thousands upon thousands of these whimsical formations! During our Turkey tour, we’ll explore these natural wonders and delve into the rich history that surrounds them.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 On our last visit, we had the unique opportunity to meet a delightful family living in one of the ancient cave homes. They welcomed us into their abode carved from fairy chimneys, offering a glimpse into a lifestyle that beautifully blends tradition with the modern world. It was an experience to treasure!

🇹🇷 This October 2024, I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be returning to Turkey, joined by my co-host Matt Sibson from the popular ‘Ancient Architects’ YouTube channel.
