SURVIVA wins AIGA 50 Books | 50 Covers 2026 Award, a longstanding survey recognizing the best of book and book cover designs from around the world. @aigadesign

AIGA on SURVIVA:

SURVIVA is a speculative artist book by Cannupa Hanska Luger that reclaims a U.S. Army survival manual as a future artifact shaped by use, loss, and adaptation.

Rather than presenting survival as institutional knowledge or militarized preparedness, the book reframes it as relational, ancestral, and lived: knowledge carried forward through practice rather than authority.

Writing, design, and material decisions evolved simultaneously through an iterative, collaborative process. A custom OpenType typeface derived from the author’s handwriting introduces controlled variation, resisting mechanical uniformity while preserving internal logic. Erasure, limited inks, exposed binding, and constrained production methods further reinforce the illusion of an object altered over time rather than newly produced.

All commercial metadata is isolated on a removable, screen-printed plastic jacket, allowing the book itself to exist as an autonomous object outside contemporary publishing systems. The red-and-black palette, die-cut title, and visible structure position SURVIVA as evidence of survival rather than a finished commodity.

As part of Cannupa Hanska Luger’s broader Future Ancestral Technologies practice, SURVIVA imagines Indigenous futures beyond colonial time. Survival here is not framed as individual endurance, but as collective memory—knowledge preserved through care, adaptation, and continued use.

(142/200) Certainty is a known toxin, convenience a charade of ever having arrived, ever having fashioned an answer that’s final, sturdy, shelf-stable. Our location might indeed be far stranger and more interesting than that, more spilling-in-from-the-periphery than we could ever imagine. Divest from arrivals and insist on intertidal becomings, bodies less object and more subject, fugitive expressions all comings and goings and bleeding into themselves, contaminate-inoculate-pierce-and-be-pierced from every angle. Transformation is plural, an inside job, to be approached from a posture of honorable complicity, not rejection from without but from within this imperfect world, within the predatory, metabolic mess and joy of it all. These times call for a politics of multispecies, multidimensional, multitemporal collision, flows of bewilderment and unsure footing but welcome and buoyant. This is corporeal poetry: earth a verb, bodies as verbs, hypertrophy and decay at once, shadow-boxing definitions of self that defy simple boxes. Nothing is ever finished, so let creativity and faith invite us into new greyscaled loyalties, new blurring ecologies, new surrender. Beware of rejecting filth as non-self, the profane, the crude, the monster. We are also monsters. But we’re love, too, and transformation is love and love is a hyphen and never a period. Live as hyphen.

Revealing the cover of Who Do You Think You Are? by Yuli Novak featuring artwork by Addam Yekutieli (Know Hope) (@thisislimbo) and type design by Melissa Weiss. Preorder your copy today. The book will be shipping on December 15th, 2026.

Braiding intimate travelogue with searing political memory, Novak traces the story of a personal and political unraveling, exploring the relationship and tension between militarism and masculinity, silence and survival, home and exile. In the wake of the ongoing destruction of Gaza, Who Do You Think You Are? reflects on the path that has carried Israel into a regime of extremism and unrestrained violence, offering a necessary meditation on conscience, complicity, and the search for another way.

Who Do You Think You Are?, the English translation of the bestselling Hebrew memoir, is an intimate and unflinching account of what it means to confront a system of violence from within. In 2015, as director of Breaking the Silence — a controversial group of Israeli army veterans resisting the occupation — Yuli Novak found herself branded a traitor by the Prime Minister, vilified by the media, subjected to death threats, and caught in the crosshairs of a nation unwilling to face its own reflection. Two years later, Novak stepped down from her role, packed a bag, and bought a one-way ticket out of the country. She set off alone, traveling from the moon-like landscape of Iceland to the beaches of Portugal and the heart of South Africa, navigating waves of grief, rage, love, and belonging.

“our survival and thriving is the survival and thriving of Earth…there is no separation between our bodies and the body of Earth.” -from the introduction in elementals:earth.

our destruction comes from a severing. the severing of us from what sustains us: connection, love, living. the goal of capitalist imperialism is to further that severing and continue profiting off the destruction until there is nothing left. to be tender within all of this seems absurd, and yet,,,

here is a bookstack for connection. to help us notice the tiny details of the world around us. to find beauty within it all. to find connections where we didn’t look before.

what book would you add to this stack?

i would add mary oliver’s devotions but i’ve currently lent it out!

This year's PEN/Jean Stein Book Award and a prize of $75,000 was won by award-winning artist and cultural innovator Cannupa Hanska Luger for SURVIVA: A Future Ancestral Field Guide (Ayin Press).

Our judges' citation read: “SURVIVA is a love song: to Earth, to community, to all who understand the only possible future is one that returns to Indigenous lifeways. What’s startling isn’t the dystopian charge—though that’s there—but the tenderness threaded through it, a choreography of care embedded in sharp surfaces. Multi-genre and multi-voiced, wholly devoted to the specificity of its observations, SURVIVA doesn’t imagine apocalypse as spectacle so much as it imagines endurance as relationship. Survival here is neither heroic nor solitary, but collective, improvised, and ethically burdened—an ongoing negotiation between Indigenous futurity, colonial debris, and the quiet insistence that something livable must still be made, even now.”

We spoke to the artist-turned-author about how his book allowed him to translate his visual ideas into a language "more people can understand."

Humbled and deeply grateful to share that SURVIVA: A Future Ancestral Field Guide has received the 2026 @penamerica PEN/Jean Stein Book Award!

This is the first book I have authored, and the first book published by newly launched @aorabooks (an imprint of @ayinpress). This feels big and important in my heart and I am overwhelmed.

Winning this award feels like a reminder to all of us who choose to carve our own path, that our stories and perspectives are necessary, important and critical for our collective survival. This recognition also signals the importance of independent artists and publishers continuing to make beautiful and radical work on our own terms. May we keep making, writing, challenging, persisting. Congratulations to all those whose work was recognized, I am in awe to be amongst your brilliance.

SURVIVA emerges from over a decade of rigorous, interdisciplinary artistic practice grounded in Indigenous knowledge, speculative fiction, continuum, relationality, and future dreaming. SURVIVA is not simply a book, it is an artwork. As my friend @jordanklepper said, “This is not a book. This is a time machine.”

Drawing from a 1970s military survival guide, SURVIVA uses poetic redaction, speculative narrative, and iterative drawing to dismantle and transform a fundamentally colonial, militarized text. In its place, I imagine an earth-based, demilitarized vision of survival, one that centers Indigenous knowledge systems as essential to the future of life on this planet.

Gratitude to my wife, Ginger Dunnill @awapuhilah, a constant wave of support. My brother Eden Pearlstein, chronic collaborator and co-pilot in poetic fever dreams. Tom Haviv @tmhaviv and AORA Press for your care and trust. @cemeskinazi thank you for your brilliant book design and for developing a font from my handwriting, pushing this publication further into the realm of art. Thank you to my mom @elkwoman for showing me the reality of a creative life, to my ancestors, my children, and to all those who have come before and will come after our brief time here together, I am because you are.

+++WE SURVIVE YOU+++
