‘A better seat you could not take
Than on the margin of this lake.
Welcome!—I hail you to my glass:
All welcome, here, you find;
Here, let the cloud of trouble pass,
Here, be all care resigned.
― Philip Freneau ‘On a Honey Bee, Drinking from a Glass of Wine, and Drowned Therein’
This comical 18th century poem about an unfortunate honey bee always reminds my sickly wine nerd brain of the vineyards in the Finger Lakes, where the incredible thermal energy held by the narrow and deep lakes is the defining feature of this underrated wine region. Seneca Lake is over 600 feet deep, and its steep banks create an environment that even a few hundred meters further from the lake would be inhospitable to the vine. This is the climatic fringe of viticulture, and the dominant style here has long been laser beam wines of purity and focus, famously from Riesling. Enter Kelby James Russell and his wife, Julia Rose Hoyle, proprietors of Apollo’s Praise.
While at Red Newt Cellars, Kelby made a name for himself experimenting with cold soaking and barrels for Riesling, earning critical acclaim that has carried over to Apollo’s Praise. The wines are richer, denser, and more complex than most of the region. And, as bees each winter must foster a generation of ‘winter bees’ built to survive the cold, Apollo’s Praise was born of nature’s biting cold as well.
The original plan was to sell nearly all of the grapes, keep their day jobs as winemakers, and eventually start a winery. However, the worst frost in 50 years made that plan inviable, and so Apollo’s Praise was born of necessity. It’s an amazing story of human adaptability that hints at their philosophy: enthusiasm for site specific wines (sustainably farmed, no herbicides of course) balanced with the realization that human intervention and technology have a role to play. Most critically, and I do believe this can be felt rather than tasted, Kelby and Julia see their wines as a way to bring people together, making wines “in praise of the music, art, and friends we love.”

Back in the cellar and back to FLX wines, this time with @apollospraise 2023 Dry Rosé. This Cab Franc rosé is like summer in a bottle! The nose is full of watermelon, lime zest, and cranberry and the palate shares these notes with added stone fruit, cherries, wet stone, and a light earthiness that this varietal is known for. As the the sun sets earlier and the temperatures begin to drop, have a glass of this to cling to what's left of this season.
