A simple trick I use before mixing: Add Utility +6 dB on the Master and leave it on while mixing. It gives you a clear visual reference for your headroom. When you’re done, turn it off and you’re left with roughly 6 dB of extra headroom. Save this for your next mix.

A simple approach I use when mixing electronic music. I start with the kick and bass because they define the foundation of the mix and how much headroom is left for everything else. I check the low end in mono, set the sidechain, clean up EQ and phase issues, then shape the character of each element. Once they work together, I group them and process the low-end bus as a whole. Then I build the rest of the mix around that foundation. Save this for your next mix.

A short excerpt from a session. Working with vocals, textures and transitions. A reverse vocal with reverb is one of the tools we can use to create movement, fill gaps and build anticipation. It’s not about the effect itself, but how it helps shape the space and flow of the track.

A moment from a 1:1 production session. Turning simple white noise into a musical texture — shaping the tone, adding a reverb tail, and creating movement with LFO. Small details can make a big difference.

About 30 years ago, one of John Digweed’s Twilo mixes opened up a completely different musical world to me. It shaped the way I listened to electronic music and influenced the music I was drawn to for many years afterwards. A lot has happened since then. Today, John and I are friends, and every now and then we still find ourselves talking about music for hours. I really value those conversations and the connection we have through music. And now, 30 years later, there’s Live at Twilo. Seeing five tracks from Sum Over Histories on this record, including music by Frankey & Sandrino, connects a few dots for me. Back then, a Twilo mix by John Digweed opened a new musical world for me. Today, our music is part of his return to Twilo. That’s a nice circle to close. Thank you, John. ❤️
