Coming back to Cape Town is always an interesting thing for me.

Holidays have often been a time where I’m searching for the next big adventure — something new, something wild, something that makes a good story. But after a huge year of running, and carrying a little injury into these holidays, I’ve had to slow down more than I’m used to.

And in that stillness, something else started to unfold.

I got to come down to Cape Town and help some friends make the trip with their baby and three-year-old — a good lesson in patience, tired children and keeping everyone entertained. From there, I was invited to stay with friends in Smitswinkel, a place I’ve looked at for years but never actually experienced.

There was something familiar about the stillness there. It reminded me of what I love about Zithulele — those places where nature surrounds you, things slow down, and you don’t need much to feel present.

I think friendship has become one of those things for me too. As I grow older, some of the things I used to chase or enjoy change, but I’m finding that I can return to them with new eyes. Through friendship, I get to experience places I might never have found on my own, meet people I wouldn’t otherwise know, and in the process understand a little more about them and myself.

On Saturday morning, we headed into the reserve for a surf at a beach I’ve spent years looking at but never had the privilege of surfing. Cold, icy barrels right on the shore. Heavy throw-overs. Quick take-offs. Shifty peaks. Elliot had to work for every one, but managed to find a couple of proper cover-ups.

It wasn’t the huge adventure I might normally have gone looking for.

It was just a weekend with good people, new friendships, old friendships, wild places, cold water and a bit more time to breathe.

And maybe that’s the adventure I needed this time around — learning that sometimes you don’t have to chase the next big thing.

Sometimes, when you slow down enough, it finds you.
