POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

This is about the visits Stanley Spencer made in the early 1950s to Northern Ireland, and the paintings he produced and people he met while there.
It is also about Merville Garden Village, situated in Newtownabbey on the northern outskirts of Belfast, where Spencer stayed at the family home of an elder brother, Harold.
In a post of September 1st I mentioned that my car had broken down in central Belfast. It was repaired the next day at the very efficient AEC Motors, also in Newtownabbey, but this necessitated a two night stay at a nearby hotel.
Two good things came out of this turn of events. Firstly, as mentioned in a post of September 2nd, I got to meet the artist Helen Bradley @helenlongstaffbradley
and see the exhibition of her inspiring work at nearby Mossley Mill.
I got intrigued about that whole, previously unfamiliar, area of Newtownabbey, Mossley, Glengormley. The second good thing, then, started from spotting a May 2024 post in the account of @belfastmodernists about Stanley Spencer’s 1951 painting, ‘Merville Garden Village’.
My intention in the slides in this post has been to make some connections between different topics in the story and to add a little fresh information.
