Ghetto Gastro (@ghettogastro), the Bronx culinary collective founded by Jon Gray (@ghettogray), Pierre Serrao (@chefp) and Lester Walker (@cheflesterwalker), pitched a YouTube channel in 2012 and got told it was too Black and too artsy. The rejection didn't stop them. They built it into a global brand out of spite, working with Nike, Timberland, Beats by Dre and Microsoft, and cooking for Cartier at Place Vendôme, Rick Owens, Virgil Abloh, the Serpentine and MoMA. They opened sacai GASTRO in Harajuku, pressing the waffle in the shape of a Nike sole. Their waffle iron with CRUX sold out in 72 hours at Williams Sonoma. This summer they fronted Instacart's Summer Hunger campaign with Feeding America. Gourmega (@gourmega), their first permanent space, opened in Greenwich Village this April. Community kitchen and café by day, clandestine dining at night, and the only way to book is an Instagram DM. Can’t believe I was able to meet such cool people, from a Michelin starred chef to a celebrity dog walker to the owners of Akbar, and so many more.
