In the Global Urban Heat Media Lab, we have many topics of interest being explored and researched by our network members in their own work as well as network collaborations.

Heat and Heritage’ is one of those topics, exploring mitigations of heat via historic and indigenous architectural and spatial cooling traditions.

@argho98, one of our India-based network members reflects: “A shaded threshold between architecture and landscape - Kumbhalgarh, a @unesco site, reminds us that heritage can also be a lesson in climate-responsive design and walking.”

On World Environment Day, 5th June, the West Bengal Hub of @placemaking_india collaborated as the Creative Partner for a special TRAM JATRA (tram journey) celebrating sustainable mobility and public participation. 🚋🌿

Through upcycled banners and handmade bookmarks supporting the cause, meaningful interactions with students and teachers from Silver Point School, and engaging discussions with citizens, the day became a platform for imagining the future of Kolkata's iconic trams.

⏩Participants shared ideas on increasing tram frequency, improving connectivity with schools, offices, and public institutions, and transforming trams into vibrant spaces for learning, dialogue, culture, and community engagement.

The conversations don't end here. We invite you to continue sharing your ideas, aspirations, and visions for our beloved trams. How would you like to see Kolkata's iconic trams reimagined for the future?

The tracks are open, and so is the conversation. 💚✨ Would you like to take a tram ride soon?

If you want a fast life go to Mumbai, if you want your city high tech then go to Bangalore, if you mean business go to Delhi but you are tired of running and just want to sit back and relax, soak in nostalgia then come to Kolkata the city of Joy , where time itself is frozen in a time capsule and enjoy a tram ride. On 5th June Kolkata celebrated the world environment day in collaboration with CUTA and Place Making India,Bengal with one of the most sustainable mode of public transportation the tram. This go green initiative ,also an attempt at reviving the once popular pollution free, low maintenance extremely sustainable mode of daily commute arranged for a Community driven Tram Yatra where citizens across all age groups from senior citizens to school students came together and celebrated, the only way Calcutta knows how to celebrate through Art, music, protest and unlimited adda. The message was simple yet clear, Trams are here to stay.

Is building footpaths only about beautification?

This week, a leading Ahmedabad daily newspaper ran a ‘mega story’ framing footpaths as ‘Foreign Concept’. The same article mentioned, in a small sidebar, that 72% of the city’s roads have no footpath at all. Two facts stated with different prominence changes the narrative.

This is not a critique of one newspaper. It is a question for all media, including ourselves as readers. What we choose to read, share, and react to is also a choice about what gets attention and what does not.

Pedestrian infrastructure is not beautification. It is planning. And how we talk about it determines whether cities build more of it or less.

Headlines shape narratives.
Narratives shape policy.
Policy shapes cities.

As Calcutta tramways face a real threat of disappearing , these tickets turned into bookmarks are reminders of a public transit system that keeps the city moving, and moving through the city affordable.

I’ve turned them into bookmarks hoping they start conversations, about mobility, access, and what we’re choosing to lose.

If you want to buy them or send them to a friend who is passionate about public transport they’re available via the link in bio or just DM me.
