Now on view: WHAT THE LAND REMEMBERS — COUNTER-ARCHIVES FROM IRAN

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Gaan kijken.

New text! “Unbridged Distances”, an essay by Öykü Sofuoğlu on @argos_arts’s 20/20 Vision programme 𝚞𝚗𝚎 𝚙𝚕𝚊𝚌𝚎 𝚟𝚒𝚍𝚎 𝚍𝚊𝚗𝚜 𝚞𝚗 𝚙𝚊𝚢𝚜𝚊𝚐𝚎

“Curated by Inge Coolsaet, the programme presents archival imagery as a gateway between collective memory and personal experiences. In both 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘯𝘰𝘳𝘥-𝘴𝘶𝘥, 𝘋𝘢𝘯𝘦𝘺 / 𝘚𝘢𝘯𝘣𝘢𝘳 (1991) and @amina.menia’s 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘓𝘪𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘍𝘰𝘰𝘵𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘭 (2020), conversation acts as a mnemonic catalyst. Despite their mutual resonance, both works are laden with absences, gaps and unresolved tensions, particularly in the context of countries whose national histories are scarred by colonial oppression, forced displacement, and exile.” — @feridemercury

Both films become and remain relevant, especially against the backdrop of the recent harassment of the Iranian football team by the US government, host of the 2026 World Cup, and the sustained violence against the Palestinian people.

𝚞𝚗𝚎 𝚙𝚕𝚊𝚌𝚎 𝚟𝚒𝚍𝚎 𝚍𝚊𝚗𝚜 𝚞𝚗 𝚙𝚊𝚢𝚜𝚊𝚐𝚎 is part of 20/20 Vision, a monthly micro-cinema night in argos’s Black Box. With only 20 chairs for 20 spectators, the audience gathers for a screening programme shaped around a topic or a filmmaker. @yancomagazine and @argos_arts collaboratively publish a monthly essay on each programme.

How are projects funded today, and what role can biennials and museums play in this? Where can we find alternative forms of funding, and how can we achieve an economically sustainable system? And what about the ethical issues, particularly within challenging political and economic contexts?

On 22 October, Flanders Arts Institute, Contour Biennale and Argos are organising a public discussion to examine the financial vulnerability of the audiovisual arts sector and the need for alternative forms of funding.

This public discussion is part of an international visitors programme. During the discussion, the invited curators will take the mic:

◐ Greg de Cuir Jr, co-founder and artistic director of the Kinopravda Institute, Belgrade
◐ Amirali Ghasemi, independent curator, Tehran-Berlin
◐ Maksym Khodak, artist and curator involved with The Pavilion of Culture, Kyiv
◐ Sophie Korschildgen, assistant curator, Lead Live and outreach at the LAS Foundation, Berlin
◐ Abirami Logendran, artistic director of Fotogalleriet, Oslo
◐ Valeria Mancinelli, head of production and programming at Lo Schermo dell’arte, Florence

The discussion will be moderated by Heidi Ballet, director of Contour Biennale.

🗓️ Thursday 22 October at 5pm
📍 Cultuurcentrum Mechelen (Minderbroedersgang 5, 2800 Mechelen)
🗣️ The conversation will be held in English.
🎟️ Free of charge. Register via the link in bio.

🧡 EN: Join us for an artist talk with Ayoung Kim, one of the participating artists of Contour Biennale 11, ‘The Eyes of the Heart and the Soul of the World’, in dialogue with curator Sofia Lemos.

Working across video, virtual reality, game simulation, performance, sound, and text, Ayoung Kim creates immersive worlds where speculative fiction meets history, mythology, technology, and geopolitics. Her work connects distant places, layered temporalities, and imagined futures, inviting us to rethink the realities we inhabit.

The artist talk is organized as part of a an international visitors’ programme organized by the Flanders Arts Institute, Argos, and Contour Biennale. The programme brings together Flemish artists and international art professionals, and offers opportunities to exchange knowledge, contextualise artistic practices and foster long-term relationships.

20/20 Vision: une place vide dans un paysage. October 21st, 18h - argos centre for audiovisual arts, Brussels

"In 1991, shortly after the end of the Gulf War, filmmaker Simone Bitton recorded an encounter between Palestinian historian Elias Sanbar and French film critic Serge Daney. Sanbar is a collector of images – an exile who archives the memory of his people: press photographs, family albums, postcards, and so on. To him, the image serves as proof of his identity. By contrast, although he spent most of his life watching films, Daney always refused to keep still images.

In 2009, the Algerian football team won a match against Egypt, securing their place in the 2010 World Cup. Algerian artist Amina Menia remembers how the celebrations seemed surreal, given that both countries were experiencing political tensions, and how they reminded her of the festivities that followed the independence of Algeria in 1962.

In both films, complex geopolitical conflicts transit through history by way of personal recollections and archival images, which seem to shore each other up against the recurrence of political oppressions, the weight of history, and the erasure of collective narratives. They become and remain relevant, especially against the backdrop of the recent harassment of the Iranian football team by the US government, host of the 2026 World Cup, and the sustained violence against the Palestinian people."

Looking back at the 𝓢𝓪𝓵𝓸𝓷 𝓔𝓷𝓬𝓸𝓾𝓷𝓽𝓮𝓻𝓼 on Friday 11 September at Salon de RendezVous

The morning began with Shaping the future of the visual arts in Brussels and Flanders, hosted by @argos_arts and @levelfive.brussels, with the support of @kunstenpunt. This participatory conversation brought together artists, collectives, organisations and institutions to consider how stronger connections could be built across Brussels and Flanders, contributing towards a General State of the Arts on the future of the visual arts in Flanders.

Throughout the day, Sincero, apaixonado by Margaux Dauby & Raúl Domingues played on loop in the Salon cinema as part of our Moving Image Programme. The screening led into a conversation between Margaux Dauby and Lisa Spilliaert, moderated by @balletheidi and hosted by argos center for audiovisual arts and @contourbiennale.

The afternoon continued with Performance Without an Audience by @guywouete, hosted by @belgianartprize, followed by two encounters bringing artistic practices and perspectives together: Wim Waelput in conversation with @ateliermichaellin, hosted by @laloge_brussels, and @helenakritis in conversation with @ali.cherri, hosted by @wiels_brussels.

A big thank you to all the artists, speakers, moderators and hosting organisations who contributed to the day and helped make the Salon Encounters possible.
