TAKING YOU BACK TO PORTUGAL
Looking back at an incredible time filming in Portugal~

The landscape brings beauty with its lush greens and misty mornings. The waterways surrounded by grasslands lined with olive and lemon trees. The bells of the sheep ringing in the distance alongside church bells.

Beyond the water, this was a destination rich in history and culture that makes for unforgettable stories to accompany the scenic waters. This is the magic that went into the Portugal rowing workouts.

Unreleased Portugal workouts still dropping - check out the Hydrow app;

A new episode of Anchored & Aligned is here 🤍

There is so much uncertainty in a big transition.

And motherhood, like so many big transitions, comes with a whole lot of uncertainty.

I had the great honour of sitting down with two-time Olympian Aisyah Rafaee as she was entering the third trimester of her first pregnancy, to talk about athlete identity, transition, uncertainty, and becoming someone new.

We talked about leaving elite sport and the grief that can come with letting go of something that has shaped so much of who you are. We talked about fear, failure, control, curiosity, and learning to trust the process.

And we talked about pregnancy and motherhood, another enormous transition with its own uncertainty and its own invitation to let go of some of what we thought we could control.

There was also a part of our conversation that I didn’t fully appreciate until I listened back.

Aisyah told me about a particularly brutal 3 x 1500m workout during her Olympic preparation. Before the second piece, she was afraid, crying, and stuck.

And what got her through wasn’t telling herself she had to succeed.

It was giving herself permission to fail as hard as she could.

I keep coming back to that.

Because sometimes the pressure to get it right, to perform, to succeed, is exactly what makes something feel impossible. What happens when we give ourselves permission to fail, and then discover that we can still take the next step?

That feels relevant far beyond sport.

We also talked about the “pie chart” of identity, IVF, changing relationships with the body, knowing when to let go, and perhaps one of the hardest things for a high performer to learn: good enough.

I felt very privileged to be invited into this particular moment in Aisyah’s journey, to have these conversations while she was preparing to become a mother, and to explore what she was carrying with her from her years as an elite athlete into this entirely new chapter.

Thank you, Aisyah, for your openness, your honesty, and for trusting me with this conversation. 🤍

“It has to end for the book to move on.”

I loved this way of thinking about transition, not as losing a part of yourself, but as getting to write the ending of one chapter and begin the next.

There can be so much grief and uncertainty in transition, even when it’s a choice we’ve made.

And yet, there’s something really powerful about remembering that we get to have a say in how we close one chapter, and how we begin the next.

From my conversation with two-time Olympian Aisyah Rafaee on athlete identity, transition, and becoming someone new without losing who you’ve been.

What happens to our sense of strength when our body changes?

For athletes especially, so much of our identity can become tied to what our bodies can do, how fast we can run, how much we can lift, what the numbers say.

In this conversation, Aisyah Rafaee talks about pregnancy changing some of those measures. She’s running slower. Rowing feels different. Her body is changing.

And yet, she says:

“My body might be bigger, but it’s also stronger in so many ways.”

There’s something powerful in that shift - not needing to prove that your body is the same, but discovering what it can do now.

Maybe strength isn’t always about pushing harder. Sometimes it’s about learning to meet your body where it is, and letting that be enough.

A conversation about pregnancy, body image, athlete identity, and redefining strength.

Full conversation coming soon 🤍

There’s so much uncertainty in a big transition. And motherhood, like so many big transitions, sure comes with a whole lot of uncertainty.

You’d think as elite athletes we’d be pros at this - but like any new thing, fear is often riding shotgun.

There are things the athletic journey can offer us in those moments: ways of meeting uncertainty, working with fear, trusting the process, and remembering that we don’t have to get everything right.

I loved these parts of my conversation with two-time Olympian Aisyah Rafaee, who was entering her third trimester when we recorded this, preparing for birth and motherhood while knowing there was so much she simply couldn’t know yet.

You can prepare as much as possible. You can do the best you can.

And then there is the part you can’t control.

For an athlete, learning to live with “good enough” can be hard.

Maybe that’s part of the work of transition: preparing where we can, letting go where we can’t, and finding a way to trust what comes next.

Full conversation coming soon 🤍

You spend your whole life running at a finish line. Then you cross it and realize it was never the thing.

A financial advisor who hit her number and walked away. An Olympian who chased one race for ten years. Neither found what they thought was waiting.
