Beneath the ancient ruins of Nendrum Monastic Site, Co. Down, we came hoping to capture the Milky Way, but the clouds had other plans.

With a KP index of 7, the aurora forecast looked promising, although a northward Bz made the display less favourable. Yet, through a brief gap in the clouds, a beautiful green glow appeared on the distant horizon, a reminder that even an unpredictable night can offer something magical.

Ancient history beneath our feet, the Northern Lights on the horizon. Sometimes, the unexpected becomes the highlight of the night.

SPACE WEEK 2026: TOWN SCIENTIST FAMILY SPACE DAY

Last Saturday, we kicked off Space Week a day early with our second Town Scientist Family Day of Space in Dundalk.

Rocket design and launch workshops. Planetarium shows. Talks on Artemis II and the night sky. And the very best questions, asked by people who’d never call themselves “science people”.

None of this happens without a team.

Thank you to our 2016 Town Scientist partners @northeastcreditunionltd; @kelledymary6 and @engineersireland Ireland North East Region, who sponsored our Rocket events & teas & coffees; big thanks to @dkit_ie for access to their pitches for the launches; Mary & team at Louthlibraryservice, who hosted us; Sandra & Chloe of @louthabcprogramme, our connection to so many of the families.

And to the people behind the scenes: my amazing hubby David, who ran the rocket workshops, and Colin and Keith from Irish Rocketry; astronomer @brendan.owens3; Rok & Franc @armaghspace; my dear pal @ruthiemc147 McAvinia; Alison and Sophie from St Vincent’s Secondary School; and @rjnmedia (photos) and Callum (video).

The big moment?
18 family-built rockets launched together, in glorious weather.

Town Scientist is growing. If your organisation would like to partner with us, or bring Town Scientist to your community, we’d love to hear from you. Link in bio.

SPACE WEEK 2026 CHRONICLES:

On Monday, I joined @irelandamvmtv to talk about 2 things close to my heart:
@worldspaceweek and the stars we don’t all get to see.

DYK that there are more homeless children in Ireland than there are stars you can see with the naked eye (2,500)?
Over 5,500 children are currently living in temporary accommodation and this number continues to rise.

From space,
there are no countries,
no borders,
no need for money,
or trinkets and baubles.
Just land and sea.

And for those who have seen the Earth from a distance,
they understand that we are one species
of many other species
sharing this planet together
The only home we’ve ever known.

Seeing Earth from space feels as if anything is possible.

Here’s my question:
What incredible things can we do when we work together?
Can we ensure that every child has a home?

I’m proud to be the 2026 @focusirelandcharity ‘Shine a Light’ Ambassador. Tomorrow night, Fri Oct 9th, organisations and Irish people across the country will sleep out to raise funds and awareness of this current plight.

If you can, please donate or share this reel.
Every bit helps a family find a home.

Thanks again to @muireann.o, @tommybowe & all the IrelandAM for the great welcome and the platform to amplify Focus Irelands annual fundraising drive. My Mam & Dad loved the personal message too 🙏🏻

🚀#DYK it's world space week 4 - 10 October?
Following the recent launch of the 'NI Space enabled region pathfinder' report a stakeholder event was held to share the findings and recommendations.

Susan Heaney (NI Space Office) overviewed examples of several use cases for public sector to address current challenges using satellite technologies.

A total of 77 use cases have been identified in the report.

The report was commissioned by the NI Space Office, funded by UK Space Agency and facilitated by Matrix.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined me yesterday for my botanical gel plate printing workshop! 🌿🎨
It was such a lovely group, and it was wonderful to see everyone experimenting, creating and producing such beautiful prints.
@thehotrockssauna, @whitehillhousefarm housefarm, @armaghspace, @donnafoxtours, @ntnltrust.
The conversation was lively, the atmosphere was relaxed, and there was so much creativity in the room.
Thank you for bringing your enthusiasm and making the day so enjoyable. I hope to see you all again at a future workshop — it would be lovely to have you back! #visitarmagh

I was recently at @armaghspace 🪐

But it got me thinking we have a good few space themed slang names here in N.Ireland

- Ya Moonbeam 🌕
- Yer a Moon Cat 🐈 🌙
- Ya absolute Rocket 🚀

All 3 are on my website now ☄️
