would you join a members’ club for a hi-fi listening experience? new york is about to get one. @stylusnyc on the lower east side will feature a dedicated hi-fi space designed by @devonojas (ojas), whose systems are the most sought after across design, fashion and hospitality.

but this isn’t happening in isolation. it sits in a much longer lineage of listening culture. from japan’s jazz kissas, where silence and deep attention were part of the ritual, to @hotelcostes in paris, where stéphane pompougnac turned a hotel into a global sonic identity with @soundsofcostes.

today, we have cultural figures like @armannafeei bringing his eclectic musical sensibilities into to design and hospitality. we also have listening spaces like @silenceplease that are changing the way third spaces and interact with music based around communal listening. even fashion flagships like @maisonvalentino are building dedicated spaces for listening as a part of retail experiences.

what ties it all together is a shift in how we value sound. in a time of isolation, algorithmic streaming and private listening, these spaces are asking us to listen properly and share taste in real time, around human curation and connection.

it’s the same idea behind why i started @actuallylistening 🤍
