New Wordmark and Identity for Instagram
—
Last week, @Instagram introduced a new wordmark designed in collaboration by Meta’s in-house team and @studiokoto (who in turn collaborated with @jeremy_mickel) along with a new identity designed in collaboration by Meta and @somethingspecialstudios (who in turn collaborated with @mallandrich for motion).

🧑‍💼 ABOUT THE CLIENT
Launched in 2010, Instagram, as you may well be aware, is one of the biggest social media platforms on the planet, with a reported 3 billion users. Its official mission as stated by Meta, which acquired it in 2012, is to “bring people closer to the people and things they love” through its Feed, Stories, Reels, Live, and messaging features “where people and creators can connect and express themselves through photos, video, and private messaging, and discover and shop from their favorite businesses.

🦸 FROM KOTO
“Redesigning one of the world’s most recognizable wordmarks presents a unique contradiction: every change matters, yet too much change risks losing everything that made it renowned in the first place. At the same time, the new wordmark needed to establish a closer relationship with Instagram’s iconic glyph and wider brand identity—creating a visual system that felt unified without sacrificing the distinct character of either asset.”

🧑‍💻 BRAND NEW’S REACTION
Overall, and, as always, you are welcome to disagree, but I do believe this was the right move at the right time to evolve the wordmark, a brand asset that was in desperate need of a change as it felt like the team at Instagram had forgotten about it. Despite the temporary uproar, loud as it was, I can guarantee that by next month, as the new wordmark sits on top of the app, it will become as familiar and intimately tied to the Instagram experience that you will not give it a second thought and ten, fifteen years from now when it gets updated you will sorely miss the quirky “r” and mourn its uniquenezz.
