Finally sitting down to make this.
I’ve had the pleasure of checking yet another dream show off my list. I remember it was one of the first shows I traveled to see while growing up. I never could’ve imagined I would be able to JAZZ in this show in this huge outdoor theater, with these people and with a better understanding of what this show offers.
I’m in awe of @karlapunogarcia , @connorschwantes @alex_evans1114 for opening the creative floor and giving us the opportunity to tell elements of our show through dance. To @worldwidewilliam and the entirety of the creative team, thank you for your vision of the world as it could be and holding up a mirror to the current one. My time with these newly found chosen fam has been nothing short of a blessing.
Til next time✌🏾🥰

Yesterday was my last show with 11 to Midnight and there are simply not enough words in my vocabulary to express how grateful I am for every single person that I got to work with on this show.

The words that I will use for now are Thank You. Thank you to every cast member, every crew member, every designer, every friend, and every audience member for teaching me and supporting me. Not only teaching me more about this industry and this amazing city but more about myself and my interests as a person. I have learned so much from every person and have valued every second spent with everyone… and yes even the stressful seconds. This show will have a permanent spot in my life and I will always remember everything that came from my time with 11 To Midnight. Thanks for teaching me to try and kill it everyday and to be myself!

“𝑨𝒉, 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒄𝒊𝒕𝒚. 𝑺𝑶 𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒚 𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒆𝒎’𝒔 𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖.” - Michael John LaChuisa in 'People Like Us’ from 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙙 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙮 (2000).

One of the best Encores! productions I have ever seen since I began attending in 1998. On and offstage everyone who made this show left it all on the floor…it is dizzying and wonderful. This 𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙙 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙮 is a sublime prohibition era New York night of debauchery, decadence and desperation ending in a denouement of despondence. The guests: artists & eccentrics, perform for each other and themselves until the booze that fuels the evening dries up, morning comes and combusts. Making a sensational NYC directorial debut, Lili-Anne Brown balances the unbridled lust and hedonism with the internal struggle of being other, trapped inside a box and yearning to get out. The entire cast - Jasmine Amy Rogers, Jordan Donica, Adrienne Warren, Tonya Pinkins, Claybourne Elder, Jelani Alladin, Meghan Murphy, Betsy Morgan, Wesley J. Barnes, Joseph Anthony Byrd, Lesli Margherita, Evan Tyrone Martin, KJ Hippensteel, Andrew Kober and Maya Rowe - bring this party to life with a frenetic energy and fervent passion. Given moments to shine on their own and together they are at once a singular performing unit and deeply individual portraits of flawed broken people. People here wear masks, play tricks on themselves & others, perform & paint faces to fit in and be who they are not. In our times of dishonesty, mob mentality and erasure, this show and production tell a tale of what happens when we lie ourselves and others to avoid battling demons who must be battled, not bottled like the bathtub gin that washes over this 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙮. Jasmine Amy Rogers is a once in a generation musical theatre talent, a Star with a capitol S, so talented, so committed, a triple threat whose performances will transcend time and space and, IMHO, be the stuff of legend. The curtain closes, she and Tonya Pinkins exchange glances, invisible connection on this stage and others, a shared energy that fuels this production...a final moment of beauty and power. 💄🥂🎼

"𝙂𝙤𝙙 𝙙𝙧𝙖𝙬𝙨 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙤𝙠𝙚𝙙 𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨..."
-David Byrne, HERE LIES LOVE
I have been a fan of Here Lies Love since seeing its original incarnation at the Public Theater’s immersive disco-set production in 2013. With a thrust stage akin to the Beaumont at Lincoln Center, the Los Angeles premiere directed by Snehal Desai smartly reimagines the setting making the audience the TV studio audience at Filipino reality show, American Troglodyte (someone way out of touch with reality). Instead of a DJ at times acting as a narrator, we have Imeldific, a drag queen host played by Drag Race alum Aura Mayari (very good).Reanne Acasio gives a stunning and rising performance as Imelda starting as a yearning schoolgirl, cosmopolitan Manila young lady pushing herself to the top, master to her husband dictator Ferdinand (Chris Renfro in a steely and beautifully sung performance) broken wife hungry for power and excess that would eventually take her down.

In 2026, with American democracy almost completely decimated, the production stings and enrages, watching unrest unfold with Marcos’ declaration of martial law, the last third of the show is literal mirror to the Trump administration and con-artist family. Imeldific, like the Emcee in many Cabaret productions, is left out of glamorous drag, putting back together the pieces of what freedom that crumbled under the Marcos regime.

In real-life, there are many parallels of Imelda and Ferdinand Marcos and Juan and Eva Person. And Here Lies Love is a rock opera like Evita. An homage to Evita is most ever here at the Mark Taper Forum: Imeldific is our Che leading us through the evening, young Imelda making her way upon arrival to Manila, a circle of lights from the rig not the floor, Imelda looking at the audience through a dressing table mirror, Marcos throwing money to the poor, the workers revolting crowds forming, an eventual realization that the facade of this couple’s glamour was a rouse, a grift, a fascist folly that cost many lives and billions of Pesos.
