thoughts:
I feel like I always say this when it comes to McNally Editions works, but they all have that ‘‘quiet, but innately human” quality to them that I can’t help but adore. There’s always something to relate to, despite the fact that many of their works are classics, so they’ve been written years ago and have lots of historical context (another thing I love about them). This one had all the staples that make McNally the best of the best reads. It’s crazy how such a short book can encole so many emotions in such a small amount of time. There were quite a few things that stood out to me. I was struck by a queer love story told in historic times, where such love was taboo. The book only mentions the word ‘lesbian’ once, but the love between Mara and Red is clear even though they both seem confused on how to define it based on their feelings verses social norms of the times. The historical context of war is also ever present and intriguing, where many men were gone and London was run by women. It was all so captivating, I highly recommend this one.
