This is my first visit to The Last Resort Artists Retreat ((TLRAR) in Baltimore. It is the centerpiece of a sustained Black arts advancement initiative by the @charmcity_cc. I was delighted to collaborate with art and culture leaders on strategies for raising the stature of Black artists in New Jersey and beyond.

On Friday night at @kubeartcenter, I joined my dear friend @derrickadamsny for a candid conversation about Black art, curation, and the importance of building visibility and capital for Black artists. It’s essential to keep these discussions going and challenge the status quo. Looking forward to what’s next.

W U N D E R L A N D N O I R 🖤 Dreamscapes In Utopia
#SOLD⚫️ #RedDot⚫️Gang #ThankYou #Thankful
.
Title: Matriarchs
Wunderland Noir | 2024
Size: 12 x 12 inches
Muses: My Mum and My Nana Asha

A reimagining of sisterhood through an Afrocentric Wonderland lens, this piece captures my mother and aunt in their youth, dancing through Tanzania's clove groves. The black ink on china creates a striking dialogue between colonial materials and African storytelling. Through delicate linework, I explore themes of Black joy, ancestral bonds, and the right to rest and play. The indigenous clove plants weave patterns of heritage and memory across the surface, admist traditional east African henna design, transforming a personal moment into a celebration of cultural identity and feminine connection.

Medium: Artist’s ink drawing lasered on white china, framed in a custom shadow-box, and finished with details in paper cut collage reconstructed with archival paper, black ink, black acrylic paint, archival tissue, and acid-free adhesives and sealants

This week marks the official beginning of art season. And @art_unpacked uncovers what’s new and happening in today’s art market. They presented an insightful brunch seminar @metropolisbymarcus. We learned how to build an art collection that resonates with cultural aspiration and aesthetic inspiration. Now, I’m ready to source for client projects … and perhaps a few treasures from my own collection. I’ll share advice on how to start your art collection in upcoming posts!

Celebrating John Wesley Dobbs 🖤 The "Unofficial Mayor" of Auburn Avenue and The Spine of The Black Community. Thank You To @dashboard_us x @hddccommunity x Family of John Wesley Dobbs @brooke.j.e #CollageArtByMoma #ICONic #ICONoclasts
.
John Wesley Dobbs (March 26, 1882 – August 30, 1961) was a prominent African-American civic and political leader in Atlanta, Georgia, often hailed as the unofficial "mayor" of Auburn Avenue, the heart of the city's black community. Dobbs co-founded the Atlanta Negro Voters League with civil rights attorney A.T. Walden, spearheading significant voter registration efforts. From 1936 to 1946, their initiative successfully registered 20,000 African Americans in Atlanta. This surge in political influence led to significant milestones, including the hiring of Atlanta's first eight African-American police officers in 1948 and the installation of street lighting along Auburn Avenue in 1949.
.
As we ramp up to the 2024 November elections, we celebrate and remember John Wesley Dobbs for his unwavering dedication to voter registration and civil rights, which paved the way for future generations @hambidgecenter @atlantaoca @marryammomaart @atlantamagazine @dashboard_us #ThankYou #Thankful #ICONic
