5 strangers + 1 solo traveler app + 1 rooftop cocktail bar = a 2 AM finish line we never saw coming

There is something freeing about solo travel but the downside is that it can get lonely at times.

When my sister 1st told me about Nomadtable, I immediately downloaded it. Nomadtable is a social networking app designed to help solo travelers connect in real time. Little did I know this app would lead to one of the best nights of my trip.

My day started with a 20-30 minute climb up Mt. Lycabettus. It's actually the highest point in Athens & sits 500 meters above the Acropolis.

The peak offers breathtaking 360 degree views of Athens. I saw the Aegean Sea, Acropolis, & the historic marble horseshoe-shaped stadium where the 1st modern Olympic games took place.

Next, I went to the Temple of Olympian Zeus. This landmark serves as the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games. Unfortunately, scaffolding was covering most of the columns. So, I admired it from outside instead.

After a day of exploring, it was time for some fun. Ari, who has been friends with my cousins for 30+ years, moved to Athens 2 years ago. I hadn't seen him in 23 years—he was just 16 then—but when we reunited it felt like no time had passed. He suggested we meet at a new trendy rooftop bar overlooking the Acropolis for sunset.

Next, he took me to Bougatsadiko Psirri, where we enjoyed bougasta & spanakopita. On the way, he showed me some street art that he personally painted, which was a special surprise.

We were having a blast when I got a message on Nomadtable from a group of girls inviting me to a nearby rooftop cocktail bar. I ended up meeting four amazing women from Norway, Australia, and Saudi Arabia at the 360 cocktail bar. By this time, the moon was shining brightly & the Acropolis was glowing. We were all having a blast & weren't ready to part ways, so we headed to Juan Rodriguez, a bar Ari suggested. When we eventially called it a night it was 2AM.

I have to say there’s a beautiful kind of magic when the lives of complete strangers collide. We had nothing in common but a boarding pass to Athens & left with a night we’ll talk about forever!

With time pressure, we forgot to post yesterday’s timetable. But for the sake of art, it’s up now.
We’ll take this opportunity to thank yesterday’s amazing artists, including @artbyalef for the beautiful art. Proper summary soon.

🧿#Artists of the world give me hope🕯️ I love my friends, new and old, and I’m grateful for their presence in my life. I believe in the power of their artwork to transcend geography, ideology, and politics. The best part about traveling very far away is that you get to make friends who challenge you and hold you simultaneously. It doesn’t matter who their family is, what their governments are doing, or where they happened to be born. These beloved souls walk the walk—do you ?
