Back at it. Maybe the most fun I've had so far on one of these. The legendary DJ Loser of Funkfreaks on a picture sleeve of his favorite track, In The Streets by Prince Charles. Swipe for the LP cover I used as inspiration.

Private Press Boogie-Rap Snoopy 45 🕊 Did you know the phrase "Doggy Dog World" first became popular in the 80s?

For Alaia, who has the most heartfelt G-Funk sets & style. We talked about Nate Dogg's unapologetic vulnerability & softness, and how G it made him. He was one of a kind 🌠

Marcus "Mugzy" after Gangsta Blac. Marcus & I had a long talk about his upbringing & the way Gangsta Blac represented for the people of South Memphis. Grillz was the nickname of Marcus' father, a lifelong Memphis legend, who adlibs on the track Da Hymn on this album. This is the last recording Marcus identifies of his dad's & its beauty is profound in his ability, as Marcus says, to "explain himself without saying a word." Similarly, Marcus shares a narrative of reverence for his father & hometown every time he sets foot on the dancefloor, competitively or not. He is one of those presences that makes the room light up without ever announcing himself-- everything he does is with his whole heart & spirit.

Featuring the Cadillac Remix of ABC My Love 🧮 I remixed the El Dorado a little bit too. Inspired by a cover of Warren G, someone with a heart in a similar key to XL's. And if you've ever seen XL perform live, you've witnessed his G-Funk background come to life in him in an undeniably masterful way.

This is Grandpa P, Pedro Velasco, my coach at Lōkahi Volleyball Club in middle school. One of the meanings of Lōkahi beyond the shorthand "Unity" refers to the relationship of Hawaiians to the ocean. Grandpa Pete trained using the resistance of the ocean rather than a weight room (as did Lōkahi.) He was 5'10", always the shortest on the team. But he had a *seventy-two* inch standing vertical jump. This was the start of the 60s, before Guiness records were really a thing. We talked story yesterday about what inspired him, and the meanings of Lōkahi. He wasn't particularly into music as far as my series goes now but heard about the Olympics on the radio & decided then that he would go. Grandpa became the first Kānaka Maoli to be inducted into the International Hall of Fame as the captain of the first two US Olympic volleyball teams. There's a lot to say about Grandpa P & his philosophy but for now I share the inspiration of his innovative spirit, which felt like an apt reminder at a time like this in which creativity with limited means is a challenge we're all faced with in new ways ♟The feeling of the Lōkahi family was an incredible sense of community that I seek my best to lend to wherever I have gone since. Thank you forever Grandpa P.

For April, featuring two of her favorite Barbara Mason songs. April's @motown_mami page is a reminder that the female vocalists of our dreams not only existed 60 years ago, but that they were still yet ahead of our time. She embodies this insight in such playful, resistant & open-hearted ways 🎼🌹🕯

This one is for David, Thunder 1 who lives & breathes this record in every way with a bigger heart than any. I loved the way this picture of him in 1987 ("Playboy Midriff" as he said 🐰) plays off of Ronnie Hudson's cover.
In David's words: "Westcoast poplock has been a fav since i first heard it as a kid..then my brother r.i.p and sisters would always have it on Dustys 1230a.m kgfj..it was all funk n soul"
