STILL, LIFE — Shaun Devenney

Scottish artist Shaun Devenney returns to Melbourne, a city he previously called home, to present Still, Life a solo exhibition exploring memory, distance and our changing relationship with the place.

The exhibition features 20 paintings depicting ordinary streets, buildings and overlooked corners of his hometown Paisley, Scotland.

Initially painted in Paisley, the works travelled with Devenney to Melbourne, where they have been reworked through layers of paint, distortion, scraping and erasure.

Having spent several years living in Melbourne before returning to Scotland, Devenney draws on his own experience of moving between places and how time away can alter our memories of them.

As familiar scenes become distorted or partially disappear, the paintings reflect how memories shift over time. How details fade, places become exaggerated and what we remember no longer quite matches reality.

Opening Friday 30 October, 5–9pm

Dispatches from under the Kingston Bridge. 💜

It was genuinely a huge privilege to site manage the Kingston Bridge Mural Pillars as they were repainted as part of @yardworksglasgow continuing public art programmes in Glasgow. 30 odd artists over 4 weeks, an average of 9 lifts on site at any one time, untold quantities of coffee, never mind the paint.

As usual, I had my cameras on me, and we were blessed with moments of beautiful angular light in the early mornings and late afternoons of September and early October.

The greatest privilege for me is to see my friends at work, and I saw my job as creating as best an environment as possible for the artists to complete their work. I love assisting people, and by observing and assisting in the odd moment it was required, I’m able to learn from the immense store of experience they’ve acquired over years of hard graft.

Another great privilege is to make new friends and new memories through work and projects like this and I’m grateful to say that was the case here.

I have enough photos to do one more post about the bridge, which I’ll get round to over the next week or so.

Big thanks to the @yardworksglasgow team and @swg3arts for facilitating the project and for the opportunity to work with them.

Why didn’t I take more wip footage of my favourite piece? Not filming probably allowed it to be a better work environment tbh

Paisley.

A mixture of new and old.

The first one is a really old one from @markworst , that has only recently reemerged from behind debris.

Sma’ Shot Day Paisley 2026.

A completely self funded project by @artbyshaun_dev who painted a celebration of Paisley, its people and the history of Sma’ Shot Day.

On the 40th anniversary of the revival of the procession, the artists wanted to capture a part of this years rainy Sma’ Shot Day.
