POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

For Halloween, skip the pumpkin cocktails. Drink where the ghosts are.

London’s grand hotels have been collecting ghost stories for over 150 years. Four of them also happen to pour some of the best drinks in the city.

The Donovan, Brown’s Hotel: a maid said to have fallen from an upper window, and Kipling’s typewriter, still heard by guests. Downstairs, the best martini in London.

American Bar, The Savoy: Britain’s first electric lifts, and one on the fifth floor said to move on its own. The bar’s most famous drink, the Hanky Panky, was invented right here by Ada Coleman.

The Martini Bar, Hawksmoor St Pancras: a guest fell to his death over the banisters in 1874, and a clerk was crushed in the luggage lift two years later. Today the old entrance hall pours some of the best martinis in London.

Artesian, The Langham: Room 333, where BBC staff kept seeing the same ghost, only ever in October. I’m told people there still feel things. The bar downstairs has been named the world’s best more times than any other.

The ghost stories are as they’ve been told for decades. The drinks are as I tasted them.

Which one are you going for Halloween?

Over 160 years of history, and still one of London’s most iconic hotels! ⭐️

First opening its doors in 1865 as Europe’s first Grand Hotel, @langham_london has welcomed everyone from royalty to literary legends. It’s also home to Palm Court, celebrated as the birthplace of hotel afternoon tea! 🫖

Today, the hotel holds 5 AA Red Stars, earning it a place among our AA Best UK Hotels, alongside recognition as an AA Best UK Spa.

And there’s plenty our inspector loved during their recent visit! From an excellent Sunday lunch at @wigmorelondon and seriously impressive cocktail creations at @artesianbarlondon, to the beautiful Palm Court, where afternoon tea and breakfast are a real treat (just look at those pastries! 🥐).

As our inspector summed it up, it’s a “polished luxury experience with plenty of personality and warmth.”

Wrapping up the month of the equinox 🌙 A seasonal pivot where day and night are of equal length, the autumn equinox signals an elegant shift in light and atmosphere.

I love the romance of these late September days, with dusky evenings and long twilights wrapped in duality, mood, and allure.

Walking you through a visual vocabulary at sundown in the city:

CONTRAST
The difference between dark and light colors or dark and light areas.

SYMMETRY
Matching size, shape, and position on opposite sides of a central axis.

NEGATIVE SPACE
The unoccupied area around and between subjects that defines their form and presence.

FRAMING
The use of surrounding elements to border and isolate a focal point within the composition.

PARALLELISM
Visual groupings where parallel elements are perceived as belonging together.

SILHOUETTE
The dark outline of a subject seen against a lighter ground.

CHIAROSCURO
Uses contrast between light and dark to direct attention and model form.

Good visual design takes its cues from different disciplines including art, photography, and architecture, as well as nature itself. It helps us convey mood and feeling through explorations in light, color, and composition, seeing beyond the literal subject of our frames.

Stay romantic xo

Ok probs not ever gonna shut up about how much I loved London!! But dumping all my fav moments hehe :) | Starting off strong with our fav English breakfast moment at @letorestaurant.official in Fitzrovia. Was absolutely stunned not only by how gorgeous the spread was, but also by how delicious everything was! Fresh sourdough with tomatoes and baked beans?? Yes plz! Also loved the cocktails at @artesianbarlondon, which were not only inventive but also delicious and kept us coming back for more. Vibes and service are also impeccable.

Shout out to the hot dogs at Craven Cottage stadium also lolol quite yummy and was necessary fuel to power through a fun and rowdy game at Fulham vs Man U!

TLDR: love London, will be planning a trip back expeditiously!

🇬🇧 A cushion adjusted before anyone thinks to ask. The ability to tell whether the person taking a seat at the bar wants to talk, needs some guidance choosing a drink or would rather carry on a conversation undisturbed. They may seem like small details. In fact, they reveal a great deal about how the quality of a hotel bar is judged today. The cocktail matters, of course. But for bars serving an international, well-traveled clientele with plenty of points of comparison, a good drink is now the baseline. Everything else depends on observation and instinct. A cocktail can be technically flawless, but it becomes far more compelling when it has a meaningful connection to where it is being served. The most natural hospitality is often the kind that conceals that machinery best. The hard part is making it look easy. Perhaps that, too, is part of the enduring appeal of the hotel bar. Learn more in the new issue of Coqtail – for fine drinkers, available at newsstands or on the online store coqtailforfinedrinkers.com/en (worldwide shipping).
