Heunkuoa (heun-kwa) which translates to home kitchen, started in my Greenpoint apartment, where our kitchen was not just a place of preparation but also a sanctuary of love, laughter and deep conversations. Chef Mem, my mother and the chef behind Heunkuoa, learned the art of Lao cooking from her mother-in-law. Heunkuoa is a love letter etched in flavors and an homage to the cherished traditions of Laotian cuisine. Being Lao is something that I share proudly. From the culture, food, music & history of my country is so unique and many people have yet to know about it or experience it so it makes me so happy when I’m able to bring the elements of food & community together. Sharing food is such an intimate experience where people are able to connect with one another, both are a big part of Lao culture. Growing up, my mother’s biggest love language was felt through her food and that’s what made me feel connected to Laos after moving to America. I hope that people can feel the love and authenticity through the our food & we hope to see you at the next pop up. Endless Gratitude to @cheftarathomas & @communenyc for hosting us once again. Inspired by the 2000s movie John Tucker Must Die, Leana had a vision to curate a shoot around archetypal high school, high fashion looks and dynamic, expressive posing. Each look features a prominent designer of that time period or a local designer of Denver from vintage @officialapplebottoms to Detailed and Designed Leather pants from @chance.ugene 🌟highlighting as our amazing models @jodean_amen @vic_krsch @pash.kopa and @_mamaleana_ who were ready to get active for the shots!

This shoot also highlights the downtown Broadway strip in Denver featuring shoot locations like @waxtraxdenver and sourcing clothes from deisgher thrift stores like @2ndstreetusa Denver lcoation. After months of planning and unexpected chaos this shoot came to fruition with the support of some key individuals on set, @artgaang leading model direction and posing on set, @777nayshun providing and styling accessories 🤲🏾

2025 film 🎞️ dump part 2 & the why

After finishing the year I went through my camera roll and realized I had shot over 1000+ film images for the year. I think the year prior I did even more. My mom gives me a hard time because she likes clean aesthetics without the nostalgic grain, loose focus and desaturated photos. It’s a hard feeling to explain but…

I’ll explain it like this…we have so many tools to make photos however we want. I can shoot on my Sony and give you technically perfect images every single time without blinking at this point. Film makes you slow down, it makes you think, it makes you patient but mostly it makes you intentional. At almost a $1 a picture it almost makes no sense in this economy but when you start to realize that memories are fleeting especially with the technology we have, you want to freeze that time. Capturing photos in the most authentic, unedited and raw ways tells the story better than any manipulated photo can. With AI being able to replicate human processes and even photography we are quickly becoming a world where people are going to beg for “authenticity” and I will shoot with film until the day that I’m no longer able to. Here’s to more moments in 2026.
