SHREWSBURY, WE’RE STAYING UP FOR A LITTLE LATE ONE ON SATURDAY 31st October.🌙🎃

Most market cafes are staying open late on Halloween night, alongside Gindifferent bar and a small selection of gorgeous retail stalls.

🍸 @gindifferentbar open until 10pm
🍽️ Eat flavours from around the world with most cafes open up to 9pm
🛍️ A handful of retail stalls open until 7–8pm (mainly on the gallery level)

Enjoy a browse and a wander (with or without a drink in hand) and grab a bite to eat.

Next is Karen Duffy! @artkduffy

Karen is a semi abstract artist with a passion for colour, light and subtle texture. Working mainly with oil paint combined with cold wax medium, she creates expressive paintings inspired by the beautiful natural world around her.

Rather than replicating a specific landscape or scene, Karen creates her own personal and emotional response to the places and moments that inspire her. Her paintings suggest the essence of special memories, allowing colour, texture and instinct to guide the work.

The addition of cold wax medium gives Karen endless opportunities to experiment with different materials and tools as each painting develops. Her process involves building up many layers, with the work often changing dramatically from start to finish. Karen particularly loves allowing hints of the under layers to remain visible, creating what she describes as a kind of “complex simplicity”.

Her approach is expressive, experimental and sometimes a little messy. As Karen says, she likes to “dance with paint”, so don’t expect a perfectly tidy studio!

📍 Visit Karen at ArtKDuffy, Level 1, Shrewsbury Market Hall, SY1 1HQ. You’ll find her near the gin bar!

Due to the Market Hall being closed on Sundays, the artists and makers there will be opening their studios on Friday 27th and Saturday 28th of November to ensure as many people as possible can pop over to see them during SYOS!

What a day! 🏃

Started with a flying visit to collect some prints from the brilliant @fstop_hammertime who’ll be part of the photography exhibition I’m organising 🙌

( IT’S THIS FRIDAY 5-7pm at the @gatewaygalleryshrewsbury )

Hot-tailed it over to the gallery to prep and paint the walls 🎨

Home to collect some posters before wandering around town to distribute.

Took some snaps of @shrewsbury_arts_trail at the @shrewsburymuseum (don’t forget to vote for your People’s Choice Award so your favourite artist has a chance to win £500).

Bumped into these two stars at @markethallshrewsbury 🥰💛 Love you @annalin.makes @makeryshropshire & @artkduffy 🙏

Btw Annalin has a great workshop ‘Learn the Art of Making Mitsuro Hikime Jewellery’ this Saturday at @englishbridgestudios (only 2 spaces left, send her a DM) 💍

Bring art into the kitchen! When is a tea towel a work of art? When it’s a print of one of artist Karen Duffy’s original paintings. 🎨

We love this new range gradually being added to Karen’s studio/retail space at @artkduffy , up on the gallery level of Shrewsbury Market Hall. 🩷🩵

The tea towels are made of a cotton drill and depict a range of Karen’s work.

Our fabulous market is full of creatives whose unique talents help to shape its distinctive character. This is artist Karen Duffy whose studio can be found on the gallery level of the market. Come and say hello. 🎨

Find Karen’s luscious paintings, cards and prints. Her work is inspired by her years living in France and beside the British coast, specialising in landscapes, seascapes and an Expressionist style of painting.

@artkduffy has been part of our market family for the past eight years.

Karen, originally from Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, was born to a family of artists. She studied a fine art degree in Northumbria, but didn’t pick up the artist’s brush to paint full-time as a professional artist until around 13 years ago.

She lived in Paris for 17 years, helping to run a family printing company. It gave her the opportunity to spend a lot of time visiting Claude Monet’s garden and house in Giverny.

“These visits and the beautiful city of Paris rekindled my passion to paint and produce art,” she says.

On returning to the UK she moved to the coast. She became captivated by the powerful scenery and developed a strong interest in seascapes. 🌊

Karen uses a semi-abstract style of painting and combines her love of lavish colour and texture, building layers with a palette knife.

“Art is in my blood, and it’s been a joy to have been able to share this with my customers, meeting so many lovely, interesting people over the last 8 years. To top it all, working in The Market Hall is like working in one big family. I love my job, customers and work colleagues.”
