Two Dougs, one dog, and a Kevin, plus hikes and views and a Biscuit who makes herself so completely at home in other people’s houses, it’s almost embarrassing.

Such a fabulous afternoon with the locals, hiking at Stoney Hill, soaking in the beauty of the woods, and the glorious views.

I cannot get over the moss here. So abundant and lush. I dug my hands in deep and felt such a connection to this beautiful planet of ours. And I hugged a tree, @cetubb. Yeah, it was a thing. Felt like I could have stayed there all day and night but probably not as I’m not great with bugs or the dark. But it’s a nice idea, isn’t it?

Wow. Just wow. What a sweet sweet day. And not a ray of sunshine and it just didn’t matter. I mean, how many gifts can one expect in a day? Demanding sunshine in addition to this scenery and these people just would have felt greedy.

Biggest take away from this? Say no to anything that doesn’t make you wanna say, HELL, YEAH!!!

We’re discussing this in my book club next Monday (October 18 at 7:30 pm). You don’t have to read it to join us but well worth even a partial read if you have time. Drop me a message if you’d like to join us.

Artist: Susan Ward
@artsward

A bit about Susan in her own words:

“Art has become more and more a life force I can’t imagine living without. After studies in graphic design and fine art, glass stoked my creative fire and became my primary creative outlet. A glass artist for 28 years, with a leaning towards contemporary and mission-style work, in this past decade I discovered a passion for painting, abstract watercolour in particular.
Why we make art is unique to every artist. For me, it is exploration, meditation, learning, growing, it elevates my joy, it is also quite regularly a challenge and often my most personal therapy. I love everything about the process – from the “failures” to the surprising successes, and the always unexpected happy accidents reinforcing an important life lesson for me - to trust in yourself and let go of the outcome. The nirvana is rarely in the outcome. I find the greatest joy in the elusive, heart nourishing elation of true immersion in a flow state.

The intangible added benefit of making art is the most remarkable community of open-hearted fellow explorers it connects me with. What began as art therapy ten years ago, has become an addiction. A healthy habit I work at committing to more and more. This is my motivation to show - it forces the showing up, making space for it, owning my voice and with so many exciting and fun starts in my repertoire, it forces the finishing.”

I’M FEELING IT. ARE YOU FEELING IT?

Next up for book club, Stitches by Anne Lamott, which reminds me ...

I was out for a neighbourhood stroll with my friend Sue the other day and we passed a little boy who was bawling his eyes out on his front porch. We looked at each other and simultaneously made that sad face — the one with the bottom lip pulled up over the top lip, the one that says, “poor baby, he feels like his world has just fallen apart but really it hasn’t but that doesn’t matter right now because he’s feeling totally crushed and that feeling is real to him at this moment."

Once we were clear of his house, I said to Sue, “wow, he thinks his life sucks now. Just wait, kiddo. It’s gonna suck so much more!”

Yeah, I know. Harsh. But life is harsh. Let’s face it — a lot of stuff sucks. Like racism, and world hunger, and climate change, and COVID-19, and broken hearts and so on and so forth. That’s why I think it’s worth contemplating, as Anne Lamott does in Stitches, how we can find significance in the face of pain and disaster.

This one’s a short and easy read, or a one hour and 47 minute listen. Join us as we attempt to make sense of the madness when we meet to discuss Stitches: A Handbook on Meaning, Hope and Repair on Monday, March 8. To RSVP, look for the Event link in my bio. Cover of Anne Lamott’s book, stitches

“Happiness comes from living as you need to, as you want to. As your inner voice tells you to. Happiness comes from being who you actually are instead of who you think you are supposed to be.” Shonda Rhimes

I am loving, seriously LOVING, “Year of Yes” by Shonda Rhimes. This woman is smart, honest, and funny as heck. I’m not usually one for audio books but personally, I find Shonda’s a joy to listen to.

If you’re up for a light but thought-provoking read, grab yourself a copy of the book or download the audio version and plan to join us for book club on February 8. Follow the link in my bio to RSVP. Are you in? Yes of yes book Shonda Rhimes virtual book flub Toronto
