Today I was working on a seascape painting which I’m submitting to the @artsworcester Small Works exhibit and I wanted to enhance the contrast between the sky and the ocean.
Since I’m a human and not a computer I painted the lower part of the sky a little lighter and the horizon line of the water a bit darker.
I don’t know what that piece of wood is that I found in my paint supply box, but it worked well to control the paint on that one area. Painting tip: you don’t just have to use paintbrushes, anything can apply paint to a canvas!

Kristi DiSalle (@kristileighcreations), “Bodies in Transition: Women’s Perception of Themselves Through Perimenopause,” canvases, acrylic paint, brushes, on view in the Material Needs 2026” exhibition through Oct. 25 at @artsworcester, 44 Portland St. @downtownworcesterbid #WorcesterMA.

Perimenopause, the time before menopause when the body prepares to stop having periods and enter menopause, is a biological transition experienced by nearly half of the world’s population, yet its physical and emotional realities are rarely discussed in public. Kristi DiSalle’s “Bodies in Transition” seeks to make those invisible experiences visible.

“Drawing on personal experiences and those of DiSalle’s friends, these #abstractpaintings translate the physiological effects of hormonal change into a visual language of color, movement, and organic form. Each piece depicts a different aspect of the menopausal transition — from chronic musculoskeletal pain and disrupted sleep to shifting body image, and emotional instability. This work concerns the motional landscapes these changes can create.

“Rather than presenting #perimenopause and #menopause as private conditions to be endured in silence, this series positions them as part of a significant life transition worthy of visibility, conversation, and empathy. By giving abstract form to experiences that often remain unseen, the work invites viewers to consider its reality. Ultimately, the series honors the resilience of those navigating these changes while challenging the silence that has long surrounded them.”

Ben Cline (@clinecraft): “Stained Glass Incorporation,” glass, solder, wood, stained glass tools, on view in the Material Needs 2026” exhibition through Oct. 25 at @artsworcester, 44 Portland St. @downtownworcesterbid #WorcesterMA.

“Ben Cline utilized his Material Needs Grant to introduce a new technique to his #woodworking: #stainedglass. Cline has been woodworking for over 25 years, and since starting to exhibit at ArtsWorcester, has continued to infuse fine art design in his practical, highly-precise wood creations.

“These boxes mark the beginning of Cline’s journey in stained glass. To give himself the time to focus on skill-building within this new medium, he opted for a box pattern that he knows well, and designed one glass pattern to repeat on each box. This also left room for experimentation with color schemes that tie the glass and wood together; For example, Cline used Ebony splines on a Tiger Maple box with a black and gray glass lid, and Purple Heart splines on a Poplar box with a purple glass lid. These combinations result in each box fully embodying its color family, across media.”

Kate Egnaczak (@train_by_living): “Visible Inventories,” gelli plates, brayers, acrylic paint, encaustic medium and paint, paper, on view in the Material Needs 2026” exhibition through Oct. 25 at @artsworcester, 44 Portland St. @downtownworcesterbid #WorcesterMA.

“Visible Inventories is a series of #monotypes situated within Kate Egnaczak’s multi-year exploration of consumer waste collected from the ponds of Worcester’s Elm Park. These #prints transform her handwritten inventory lists of trash into a visual index. Utilizing waste as a medium significantly shapes both Egnaczak’s artistic and creative processes; the found objects she collects function as both subject matter and physical tools to make these prints.”

Jennifer Davis Carey (@jennifercareyartworks), “Mythos Mine, Mythos Ours”), enamels, copper, cyanotype materials, beads, ephemera, on view in the Material Needs 2026” exhibition through Oct. 25 at @artsworcester, 44 Portland St. @downtownworcesterbid #WorcesterMA.

“Carey has been working in #enamel since grammar school; her studio practice focuses on decorative objects, #contemporaryart pieces, and on occasion, jewelry. Her latest series explores the manifestations of #femaledeities across many different cultures, and incorporates new techniques and materials such as cyanotype, stitching, and beading.

“As this project evolved, Carey began a much more personal examination of those myths that have and continue to inform her inner journey and its personal and communal expressions.

“Carey researched the work of writer and world mythology professor Joseph Campbell, who taught that all myths are variations on the same story. Campbell’s work also urges readers to draw on relevant elements of religion and #mythology to craft a way of meeting contemporary challenges. This body of enameled work is Carey’s response to that charge.”

@sheila.papetti, “The Coat Series,” #dressmaking form, notions, fabric, pattern drafting paper, on view through in the “Material Needs 2026” exhibition through Oct. 25 at @artsworcester, 44 Portland St. @downtownworcesterbid #WorcesterMA.

“Created through # patternmaking, paper sculpture, textile construction, leatherwork, machine sewing, and hand stitching, these garments draw on Papetti’s lifelong experience making clothing and her professional background in #fashiondesign, while embracing sculpture as a means of storytelling.

“Inspired by her French, Sakha (Yakut), and Irish maternal ancestry, Sheila Papetti uses #fashion and design to explore how identity is shaped through inheritance, lived experience, and conscious choice. Throughout her research on the histories, symbols, and traditions tied to her lineage, her work expanded beyond genealogy into a broader reflection on memory, resilience, and transformation.”

“Anne Harris’ practice visualizes her relationship with the natural world and its animal inhabitants. Harris has spent the past two years working with and alongside a black vulture named Uncle Fester and a turkey vulture named Gomez. Permanently injured, these vultures live at the @bluehillstrailsidemuseum in #MiltonMA, a @massaudubon wildlife sanctuary. I’m excited to share that my newest, (and most favorite) body of work called Misunderstood Animals: Uncle Fester, The Black Vulture is on view the @artsworcester gallery! I’m honored and beyond grateful to be 1 of 7 recipients awarded an ArtsWorcester Material Needs Grant which funded the creation of this special project. For the first time in a long time, I feel confident and extremely proud of this work.

If you’ve been following me here for a while, it’s no secret I’m obsessed with a black vulture named Uncle Fester and a turkey vulture named Gomez who live at the @bluehillstrailsidemuseum

You've seen a small selection of my drawings, paintings, and videos but the truth is it's been hard to post here but I’m working on letting go of this fear.

Walking into the installation is like walking into a big, warm hug. It’s very emotional for me. Dozens of drawings, a series of oil paintings, and a performance art video take you inside of my mind and into Uncle Fester's world. It’s an all encompassing experience, just like when I'm with Uncle Fester.

I invite you to stop by, to check out my work, and the other wonderful artists and their personal projects in this show. There’s a Meet the Artists event coming up on Saturday, October 3rd from 1-3pm. Drop in and talk to us about our work. I hope to see you there!

Thank you for the opening photos @nathanfiskephotography, they really capture how special this evening was and how happy I felt. I appreciate you.

If you're still reading this, almost all of the works are for sale! If you've had your eye on an Uncle Fester or Gomez to bring home, please visit the link in my bio. Thanks for appreciating vultures, and for supporting my work.

I have a lot of special people to thank, but I’m still trying to find the words to convey the enormous gratitude I have for these individuals. xoxo for now, Anne
