POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

On Thursday I met up with the Art of Exploration Collective at the Royal Geographical Society in London. It was so nice to meet up, exchange stories and see and hear about latest works and projects in person. Apologies to individuals for their not very accurate likenesses(!) I defo still need to practice drawing people live. I wanted to capture the venerable feel of the room and building. We got a sneaky preview of the GeoArtBioblitz exhibition which is is on display this weekend at the Explore Festival and then I had to dash off to catch a train home. Thank you to Roseann @roseannhanson for the invite and for organising and sharing 😍 Much appreciated.

BIO 3500 explored the stunning coastal environments of Monterey Bay this past weekend! Students camped for two nights, visited The Pacific Grove Museum of Natural history, met science illustrator and artist Kristen Carlson, explored tide pools, and toured the Monterey Bay Aquarium — connecting art, science, and nature all in one unforgettable trip. 🌿🐚🐳

First Friday Pacific Grove was so fun! I haven't visited the museum in a long time. The taxidermy was amazing (better than what I saw in Paris), I loved the art exhibits, and I ran into an old TMMC friend as well. 😃🐻❤️🦅 #pgmuseum #taxidermy #californiagrizzly #skulls #fridayfeels #firstfriday #ilovemaps

Wanderlust: Artwork of Kirsten Carlson
Is on view now through October 5!

This beautiful exhibit features a selection of Kirsten's favorite marine themed illustrations and projects since her graduation from the Science Illustration Certificate Program at CSUMB. We love the way she imbues her subjects with feeling, bringing them to life and giving her audience new ways to think about these incredible species. Stop by soon to experience it for yourself, and big thanks to @Artsyfishy for sharing her work with us!

A cyanometer is an instrument for measuring the intensity of blue in the sky. Its invention in 1789 is attributed to the mountain climber and physicist Horace-Bénédict de Saussure and Alexander von Humboldt. De Saussure’s cyanometer consists of 53 sections, numbered cards, ranging from white to different shades of blue (tinted with Prussian blue) and then to black, arranged in a circle. The idea of recording the hues of the sky occurred to him on one of his trips climbing Mont Blanc. He, as well as other mountain climbers, had noticed that as they climbed higher, the sky became a darker blue. Saussure demonstrated that the sky darkened as one ascended. He was also convinced that the color of the sky was an optical effect and argued that, since the blue faded subtly into the white of the clouds, the color must be an indicator of the moisture content of the air.
De Saussure concluded that the color of the sky depended on the amount of particles, water droplets and ice crystals, suspended in the atmosphere.

On the last day of the @moku.art + @mangoresidencia Oceans Residency, ahead of our Open Studio next week, I’m reflecting on the many conversations and relationships between the artists, scientists and facilitators that will have a lasting impact on my practice. What a joy to work side by side with a shared mindset!

Process images: 1. Hundreds of paper cutouts; 2. Microplastics diverted from the Pacific; 3. Handmade paper with embedded microplastic; 4. My daughter’s suggestions for people poses; 5. Light + shadow play.

A big thanks to Dr. Jenna Sullivan-Stack for being our speaker at one of our residency meetings!

Dr. Sullivan-Stack’s background is in intertidal community ecology research along the US west coast – so, species interactions, how they are affected by changing environments, etc. Recently, she’s been focusing less on intertidal research and more on how insights from western science and other ways of knowing can be used to make informed decisions around ocean protection and use.
