#TresartInsiderViews NextGen Artist Monitor: The latest edition of ArtTactic’s “NextGen Artist Monitor'' report highlights that Shara Hueges and Amoako Boafo -two artists we keep on our radar- are ranked among the top three in artist sales: in 2022, 46 paintings by Hughes generated $21.8 million and 17 works by Boafo fetched $7.6 million. Both artists also earned spots in the firm’s 2023 Short-Term Confidence Ranking, signaling high levels of positive short-term confidence among experts. “NextGen Artist Monitor'' is the art market research firm’s initiative to better understand the growing market for a younger generation of artists.

In 1971, US publishing giant Harry N. Abrams released the seminal monograph on Indian modernist Maqbool Fida Husain. Authored by revered art critics Richard Bartholomew and Shiv S. Kapur, the book represented a landmark survey of the artist’s life and work up to this point. Five decades later, it remains the most important and esteemed publication on the celebrated painter, and gracing its instantly recognizable cover, is the striking 1961 painting, Bulls, the star lot of this auction.

The history of the current lot, in itself, serves to illustrate the growth of Husain’s market, and that of modern South Asian art more widely. Formerly in the collection of Abrams himself, Bulls was exhibited in Husain’s first solo show in an American museum - the Worcester Art Museum, Massachusetts, in 1974. Almost thirty years later, the painting appeared at auction for the first time, at Christie’s New York in 2003.

Husain considered Bulls to be a very important work in his oeuvre, and at the auction, sitting next to the current owner, he requested that he keep bidding until he said to stop. Against a pre-sale estimate of $18,000 - 24,000, the painting sold for an incredible $107,550. This was a world record price at the time for Husain and represented only the third painting by an Indian artist to cross the $100,000 mark at auction.

Long version: I’m excited to share with you, many of whom have known me as an intellectual property lawyer for many decades focusing on artistic designs that transmute into trademarks, that last year I took the decision to build on this background and I completed a course with the Sotheby’s London Institute of Art and Business (@sothebysinstitute) held in conjunction with the University of Manchester. I spent almost four months in London learning from some of the best in the art world. I’m profoundly grateful for that opportunity. While at the Institute I had the privilege to take classes from the founder of @arttactic Anders Petterson. For those of you who do not know, #ArtTactic is the premier cutting edge art investment analysis report. It is literally the go-to analysis service for art investment and art market trends. It is followed by everybody important in the art world, including the chief art reporter for the Wall Street Journal @kellycrowwsj. And if you are interested in art investment, you should be following them as well. 👀Anyway, last month while I was in the midst of my first curation job designing the exhibit in the lobby for Kinkaid‘s Spring musical, Anders gave me the opportunity to write on #NextGen artists and collector response at #FriezeLA, one of an important network of art fairs collectively known as #Frieze. So I wrote a story spotlighting next generation artists, and I am pleased and honored to tell you that it has been been published!! 🎉🎉🙌🙌 In it, there’s a link to an audio interview I had the pleasure and privilege of conducting with the #FriezeImpactPrize winner Narsiso Martinez.
