Currently running the risk of falling behind on sharing content. In between these shots and now is a coastal hike, a flock of birds, a sunset and a campfire. Off the top of my head. Lots to share and I think it’s just been a couple late nights and rainy days that have kept me off my phone so I’ll try to get caught up. The Skyline Trail is very popular, so half of its trail is graded. Reminded me of a lot of the trails in Arches National Park, and not in a good way. I guess good for accessibility, but as I’m biking on asphalt all day I miss the feel of the rugged terrain of ditches, roots and rocks under my feet. So as we headed out of the trailhead I was looking forward to the dirt. The weeks prior to the #truenorthnlc gathering, I was a bit of an anxious mess. I was getting anxiety attacks from every phone call I got, I wasn’t able to get anywhere close to enough sleep (simply because I was too worried to sleep) and to be honest I was still grieving from some things that happened the month before (which I never gave myself time to process). I did try addressing it as burnout at first, but I came to realize that it was so much more for myself. I was (and kinda still am) at a place where I find the stress, the emotional weight and pressure of community organizing/decolonial work was outweighing my drive and passion to be in the work. While I love the people and the communities I work with, I was questioning whether or not it was worth it anymore.
While midway didn’t solve or answer this question fully, it did give me the time and space I needed to reflect. One of my first interactions up north was a chat with our ‘wood guy’, Waylon who said “You know this place is different. You see the air, the mountains, the trees and the water, it just makes you feel rested. You realize time doesn’t exist, you sleep all you need, and you get the time you need”. He was so so right.
Beyond the beautiful land, the gathering itself also provided so much. Learning and just hanging out with Gwich’in elders, having ‘raggedy’ times with youth who tugged my hair to shit, going berry picking, getting to gamble against kookums in bingo, getting picked on by elders for my wack fishing skills and the whole nine yards, it was just amazing.
The space, the gathering and the people at midway, brought so many learnings my way. I had a chance to witness the pure determination (trying) of the Gwich’in people, I had the time and space to recognize my grief, and I came to understand new l boundaries I needed in my life.
Even with all these learnings, I know that I’m still on a path to re-find that drive in a healthy way. I also know that without this experience that I’d still be questioning this path and wouldn’t be on this new journey.

I spent the July 1st weekend in a new corner of the continent alongside a small group of friends hailing from opposite sides of the country. With the help of airplanes, a minivan and our own feet, we spent a collective ~24 hours in transit before stepping into Tombstone Territorial Park in northern Yukon, a mere two hours from the Article Circle.

With no fireworks or BBQs, our celebrations were relaxed and somewhat unpatriotic, scattered with gentle reminders that we were guests on the fragile tundra and in the communities that call it home.

Thanks, @asad_ch, for inviting us to explore your new home — it was a welcome reminder of both how big and small our country really is.

Happy Canada Day! While we are celebrating and grateful for this country that has afforded many of us in the diaspora opportunities that our ancestors only dreamed of, we also want to recognize our place as settlers – regardless of when we arrived – who have benefitted and continue to benefit from colonial violence on this land

We want to remind each other of how urgently current this history is and push each other to make this country better for all, not just for some and not just when it is convenient.

As part of our celebration today, we are re-reading contributor @taabaii’s piece “Home On Native Land” (page 59) and @asad_ch’s poem “Indigenous on the Red Road” (page 75) reflecting on our roles and responsibilities as immigrant settlers. We also encourage you to read through our resources on allyship for our Indigenous brothers and sisters (link in bio). Today and every day we are proud to be hyphenated Canadians who amplify the voices left unheard in the mainstream. 🇨🇦✊🏾

We're particularly excited to catch the documentary Batik Sarong that follows @shazlin.r's journey back to Malaysia to retrace her roots and to understand the legacy of love and beauty left behind by her late grandmother, Mok. The sarongs pictured here are Mok’s. •
Shazlin has also been documenting the lessons she’s learned from her grandmother through her art at @hersarong.

The Ogilvie River, named after a 19th-century surveyor, was the traditional mode of transportation for Indigenous peoples long before roads cut through the watersheds. It was kind of cool to realize that the route in this photo had connected Gwich’in people from the headwaters at Ts’iizhúu’ Mountain to destinations as far as Alaska and the Northwest Territories since time immemorial. I liked the Ogilvie. #astheravenflies #trulyarctic #exploreyukon #yukon
