I usually never post long texts like this. I always just share a video or a photo. But it feels right to open my heart with words for the very first time, because I am at a very meaningful point in my life right now, especially after a long time away and recently returning to Israel.
For most of my life, I worked as a professional timpani player in professional orchestras in Israel and across Europe.
But when it came to jazz drumming, I was coming from a completely different world and wasn’t really a jazz drummer yet, but I did it anyway.
Back in 2004 and 2005, when this music was recorded, I gathered the people who surrounded my life at the time, my closest friends:
@avishai_cohen_trumpet, @omeravital, @omrimormusic, 16 year old @asaf_yuria, @amos_hoffman_music, and @giladabro.
Looking back, the magic of this record isn’t about technical perfection. It is about that unique kind of open communication between men where we actually talk about what we feel, which is pretty rare around here.
This music doesn’t really represent where I am today, musically or mentally, but it is so much fun to listen to because it came from a super authentic and true place. I just want to tell that story of back then.
I felt that what we had there was simply pure truth between friends and a powerful authenticity. It’s a recording of life itself.
Life took a turn after that, I got married, put down the sticks, and soon welcomed my children, Adam and Leah, the best thing that ever happened to my life.
The music stayed offline during all those years.
Now, at 53, things are shifting again.
I am not very updated on how the digital world works these days, so I am going to figure out how to bring this to digital platforms.
Stay tuned, and I will publish this music online very soon.

𝗜𝗡 𝗟𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧 𝗢𝗙 𝗔 𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗠𝗢𝗢𝗡 by Asaf Yuria is out today!

Five years after Exorcisms, our dearest JOJO RECORDS family member and sax player extraordinaire is back. It's already his 3rd appearance on our label (including his wonderful participation in Simon Belelty's Pee Wee).
"I'd been dreaming about this record for more than a decade," he says. It took these amazing players two days at the iconic Van Gelder Studio to make it real.

It's an even greater honor to hear him surrounded by the musicians who shaped him as musician, some of them once his teachers, now his bandmates:

George Cables – piano
Omer Avital – double bass
Billy Hart – drums
Guest Joe Magnarelli – trumpet

We can't wait for you to discover these 7 pieces moving from hard bop to blues to ballads, with music by John Hicks, Hank Mobley, Jimmy Van Heusen, Dizzy Gillespie, two George Cables compositions and one Asaf original. Featuring two unforgettable duets with the one and only George Cables.

The light is everywhere for this special day ☀️

Liner notes by T.J. English
Photographs & Design by Dan Balilty
