👽 ONE LAST WEEKEND OF ALI(E/A)NSI

Can’t wait to welcome you back tomorrow for the final weekend of the exhibition.

And when you enter NOVILLA, this is where the journey begins: ALIEN, the first of our five spaces.

Spread across the entrance, staircase and hallway is Asarela Orchidia Dewi’s Rehearsing Becoming (2026), a three-channel video installation accompanied by sound, unfolding simultaneously through the architecture.

The work reflects on the Wilhelminenhof area as a place shaped by generations of arrival. Once an industrial complex connected first to AEG and later VEB Kabelwerk Oberspree (KWO), the site has been crossed by factory workers, forced labourers, contract workers and, today, students.

Beginning with @asarela.dewi own experience of arriving in Berlin as an international student, Rehearsing Becoming brings personal memories into conversation with archival materials and histories embedded in the site. It traces recurring gestures of arriving, adapting, surviving and searching for belonging.

Its three video channels move between historical archives of factories, workers and AEG/KWO materials; Asarela’s personal archive from their student years; and fragmented textual memories and feelings.

It is the first encounter with ALI(E/A)NSI:
ALIEN → ALIENATION → ALIGNMENT → ALLIANCE → AFFINITY

Come experience the journey one last weekend. 👽

👽 ALI(E/A)NSI RADIO SERIES
EPISODE 1: ALIEN

Thank you to everyone who visited and spent time with us during the second week of ALI(E/A)NSI.

While we prepare for the exhibition’s final weekend and Saturday’s finissage programme, we are sharing the first episode of the ALI(E/A)NSI Radio Series. This radio piece grew from the exhibition’s curatorial process and the conversations developed for its publication. It is also part of the ASSOY Radio broadcasting programme presented throughout the exhibition.

In ALIEN, Zoé Febvre-Utrilla reflects on Myspace, blogging, K-pop fandom and ASMR: digital spaces that can make us feel less alone, but can also turn intimacy, care and attention into products. For Zoé, affection and criticism can coexist. Being a fan can mean loving something deeply enough to recognise its contradictions.

Arel / Asarela Orchidia Dewi speaks about arriving in Berlin with both hope and fear, navigating education in another language, living without a Plan B, and searching for belonging as a queer diasporic person. Arel also reflects on filmmaking as a language through which their story could finally be understood, and on discovering recognition within diasporic communities such as sōydivision.

Together, these voices ask how alienness is shaped by platforms, language, migration, architecture and the uncertain desire to belong.

Featuring Zoé Febvre-Utrilla and Asarela Orchidia Dewi
Assembled by Ariel William Orah

Being part of the ALI(E/A)NSI exhibition project has been the creative highlight of my summer. Thank you Ariel Orah of @soydivision.berlin for inviting me to participate with such an amazing 🌶️🔥group of artists!
ALI(E/A)NSI (read: ALIÄNSI)
"Starting from where we are
ALI(E/A)NSI began from a fairly simple shared feeling: the world is not okay.

Climate collapse, displacement, war, economic precarity, social polarization, ecological grief, housing pressure, rising nationalism and loneliness do not arrive as one coherent crisis. They arrive unevenly, in fragments, and they are experienced differently depending on where we stand, where we have come from, and what kinds of histories we carry.

An exhibition cannot contain all of this, nor should it pretend to. ALI(E/A)NSI does not try to represent a global polycrisis or gather artworks as illustrations of it. The project starts closer to where we are: with a particular house, a neighbourhood, a group of people whose paths have crossed there, and the different realities they bring with them.

This closeness matters. There is a desire here to engage again with lived experience, with the places we inhabit and the people around us, rather than allowing the scale of global crisis to remain abstract and overwhelming. What does coexistence actually look like at the scale of a neighbourhood, an artistic community, a shared building, a conversation? What kinds of relations are possible when people do not necessarily share the same histories, aesthetics, identities or political positions?

In this sense, ALI(E/A)NSI begins with fragments: fragments of memory, migration, artistic research, neighbourhood experience, ecological anxiety, disagreement, suspicion, friendship and hope. The exhibition asks what might happen when these fragments are allowed to encounter one another without being forced into a single story." - Ariel Orah, sōydivision curatorial notes

@asarela.dewi investigation work traces the memories held by machines, buildings, and repeated gestures of labour. Moving between Schöneweide’s industrial past and the artist’s own working process, the installation asks how a new body enters a place already marked by other hands.

“The machines remember before we do.

Different hands.
Different labour.
Same floor.

Perhaps belonging is not being the first to arrive, but leaving a trace among traces already there.”

ALI(E/A)NSI Artist Series [#1] 👽🌶️👽
Asarela Orchidia Dewi - @asarela.dewi

Asarela Orchidia Dewi is an Indonesian artist and filmmaker based in Berlin. They hold a degree in Communication Design from the University of Applied Sciences Berlin.

Drawing from their nomadic upbringing, Asarela finds inspiration in the emotions of alienation and exploration. Their focus lies in exploring queer and diasporic experiences through various mediums such as film, visual art, and performance art.

Since 2018, Asarela has worked closely with sōydivision, collaborating on video installations, performances, and interdisciplinary artistic projects. They also collaborate with Ballhaus Naunynstraße as a visual artist and director.

In 2021, Asarela wrote and directed their debut short film, Memori Dia (Their Memory), which was screened at festivals including the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival and XPOSED Queer Film Festival.

For ALI(E/A)NSI, Asarela presents Rehearsing Becoming, a work that departs from their personal relationship with the HTW Berlin campus in Oberschöneweide, housed within the former industrial complex. Having first encountered these buildings as an international student from Indonesia, Asarela traces questions of arrival, belonging and becoming through a site shaped by different histories of labour, migration and education, bringing personal experience into conversation with the layered histories embedded in the architecture.
