A former tech CEO is paying people to move to West Virginia, and yes, it’s real.

Ascend West Virginia was launched by Brad Smith, the former CEO of Intuit, through his foundation, and it’s run out of West Virginia University. If you’re accepted, you get $12,000 ($500 a month for two years), plus $2,500 worth of free outdoor rec, a coworking space, and local events to actually meet people.

The catch: it’s competitive. You need a full-time remote job with a company based outside West Virginia, and fewer than 2 out of every 100 applicants have been accepted and moved here so far.

Six communities to choose from:
→ Morgantown
→ Greenbrier Valley
→ Greater Elkins
→ New River Gorge
→ Charleston Area
→ Eastern Panhandle (hi, that’s me)

I wouldn’t move just for the money, but it’s a great perk if you’re already thinking about calling the Mountain State home.

Comment ASCEND and I’ll send you the link to apply.

West Virginia paid me $12,000 to move here, and it’s through a program called Ascend WV.

They pay remote workers $12,000 (spread over two years) to move to one of six West Virginia communities. I’m in the Eastern Panhandle cohort, about an hour from D.C.

The basics:
→ Full-time remote job with a company based outside WV
→ 18+, U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident
→ Currently living outside West Virginia
→ Able to move within six months of acceptance

You also get over $2,500 in free outdoor rec, coworking space, and actual friends. And if you’re a veteran, Ascend Heroes offers the same $12k.

Heads up: it counts as taxable income, so plan for that.
