Kim Pastore, founder of the @jorgepastorefoundation , lost her husband Jorge, an Austin PD SWAT officer, in the line of duty in 2023. What she built in the aftermath, in a remarkably short amount of time and entirely from the outside looking in, is one of the most honest, boots-on-the-ground efforts to close the training gap facing law enforcement in this country. This conversation was long overdue.

Kim and I trace the full arc: from Fort Lauderdale, a karate school, and a firefighter-paramedic who couldn’t shake the pull of tactical law enforcement, all the way to Austin, COVID, defund protests, a SWAT career, a line of duty death, and a foundation that is now putting officers through world-class training from Texas to New Jersey to Alabama and beyond. What you’ll hear is not a polished nonprofit pitch. It’s a real conversation about what it costs to build something like this, what the obstacles actually are, and why the people doing the most important work are often the ones getting the most pushback.

The training gap is real, it’s leadership-driven, and it’s fixable. Kim breaks down exactly why consistent, valuable training is so hard for patrol officers to access, what the foundation is doing to solve it one class at a time, and what a model built on radical transparency with donors actually looks like in practice. If you have ever wondered where your money goes when you give to a law enforcement nonprofit, this episode answers that question with specifics.

And then the conversation goes somewhere even heavier: the line of duty death notification process, the wife’s perspective no one in the room has ever heard, and why leadership at every level needs to have a plan in place before the worst day happens. Kim has spoken at law enforcement conferences across the country on this, and the lines that form afterward tell you everything about how much the community needed someone to finally say it out loud.

THE STANDARD OUTLIVES THE MAN

200 MPH is fast.

But so is 185.

A race car doesn’t run every section of the track at 200. The driver is constantly reading what’s in front of him.

Straightaway? Get on the gas.

Long sweeping curve? Maybe 130.

Tight corner? Maybe 40 or 50.

Then, as soon as the road allows it, you’re back on the gas.

This is an analogy I use when teaching CQB because it explains speed, control, and efficiency better than simply telling someone to “go faster.”

Speed is relative to the problem.

And just as important is efficiency.

The best drivers aren’t wasting movement, overcorrecting, braking unnecessarily, or carrying speed where it doesn’t belong. Every input has a purpose.

The same applies to CQB and shooting.

Efficiency means eliminating wasted movement, wasted time, unnecessary inputs, and anything that doesn’t help solve the problem.

There’s another part of the analogy that matters:

Those who only drive slow can’t suddenly drive fast when they need to.

If you never train at speed, you can’t expect speed to magically appear when the situation demands it.

That applies directly to shooting and CQB.

If you only shoot at a comfortable pace, you never learn to process information, see what you need to see, make decisions, and perform efficiently at higher speeds.

If you only practice moving slowly through CQB problems, you never develop the ability to accelerate when the environment gives you the opportunity—or when the situation requires it.

The goal isn’t to operate at maximum speed all the time.

The goal is to have gears.

Know when you can go 270.
Know when the problem requires 180.
Know when you need to slow to 40 or 50.

Then, when the road opens back up, get back on the gas.

That’s velocitization.

Train at speed.
Learn to process at speed.
Become efficient at speed.
Learn where your limits are.

Then make speed a deliberate choice—not something you hope you can produce when you need it.

Confusing preference for policy. This has been an ongoing conversation I’ve been having since @ascensiontnc episode dropped a few weeks ago.

Sean from @readyandabledefense and discusses challenges teams encounter when clear SOPs and TTPs aren’t codified, communicated, or understood.

If the intention is to gain value in training as a team or with a 3rd party instructor, a solid foundation and predictability within the team is critical.

Hiring an interior decorator to beautify your dirty house is likely the wrong order of operations 🤷‍♂️

There is $1,000 on the line for this drill.

I know this is crazy to attempt on the internet, but we’re going to use the honor system for your distances and clean targets. As such, known cheaters will won’t be eligible to win. You know who you are.

1. Your submission video must be continuous and include clean targets, shot timer, your run, and the hits. Minor Hit factor scoring applies for everyone.
2. Pistols start in holsters. Carbines start with the buttstock touching your belt.
3. Both feet on the ground, cone or marker between your feet for shooting
4. We reserve the right to disqualify a submission for any reason, don’t be a D bag and we won’t either
5. You can run the drill as many times as you want, it doesn’t have to be cold
6. It ends on the 5th of October, I’ll figure out who wins on the 6th

To enter post your video, tag @sofletehq or send it in a DM.

Bonus money: I’m going to pick a LE or active MIL guy submission to win another $250, the more of your coworkers you get out to a range day using HF scoring the better your chances of winning.
