One year ago, the Eaton Fire took the home my parents bought in 1980. The house that raised our family, held our prayers, and carried so much of our history.

I didn’t live there anymore, but it was still home in all the ways that matter. Losing a place like that is a quiet kind of grief. It shows up in memories, in photos, in the moments you wish you could go back.

And for my mom, the weight was even heavier. Just five months earlier, she lost my dad suddenly. Then the house. Yet with grace, faith, and a resilience I’m in awe of, she keeps moving forward.

This past year has reminded me of something powerful:

Community still exists.
Love still shows up.
And God stays close.

People surrounded my mom with prayers, meals, donations, support, and presence. Organizations stepped in and carried burdens we didn’t know how to hold:

🫶🏾 @officeof_office — architectural plans, pro bono.
🫶🏾 @beygood — grants directly to families.
🫶🏾 @sgvhabitat — literally rebuilding houses.
🫶🏾 @blackfreedomfund — pouring money and resources back into the community.

And people like @zcali333, who held Altadena up while walking through unimaginable loss, showed us what true courage looks like, while @onthatgram brought light and hope by reopening five local businesses and showing us that starting again is possible.

We are rebuilding. My mom, our family, and this community. Not exactly as it was, but brick by brick, prayer by prayer.

I hold grief and gratitude together. I honor what we lost, and I’m thankful for what remains. Beauty really does rise from ashes.

To everyone who showed up for my mom and for our community…thank you. We feel it. We don’t take it lightly.

Here’s to rebuilding hearts, homes, and hope together. 🫶🏾

Finally dropped these last ones in the mail today. Very humbled and honored to have taken part of this project started by @asherbingham.fineart who selflessly volunteered her time to draw the homes lost to the LA fires.

When I drew these homes, I tried to pay attention to the house being a home where memories were created within the walls or outside under the trees. It is such a bitter sweet feeling to serve this way because I see the beauty and the warmth and then also struck by the loss. I could only hope this brings a tiny bit of comfort to the home owners and the families.
May all our homes and memories live on always in our hearts.
