Innovation doesn't always begin with inventing something entirely new. Sometimes, it begins with recognising that an existing system isn't working for everyone.

Ashlee Wisdom recognised a need for healthcare that better understood the experiences of Black women and women of colour.

Drawing on her background in public health, she founded Health in Her HUE, a digital platform designed to connect women with culturally responsive healthcare and relevant health resources.

Her journey is a reminder that our professional knowledge, observations, and personal experiences can help us identify opportunities to make a difference.

You don't need to have every detail figured out before you begin exploring an idea. What matters is recognising the problem, learning what is needed, and taking meaningful steps towards a solution.

Every founder on this carousel noticed a gap in women’s healthcare and built the company they wished existed.

Fertility diagnostics, menopause care, maternal wellness, sexual health, nutrition. These are the founders reshaping an industry that’s ignored women’s bodies for too long, one overlooked problem at a time.

After experiencing racism and sexism while working in the healthcare industry, Ashlee Wisdom (@ashleejwisdom) developed chronic hives from the stress. That experience introduced her to the concept of weathering, the idea that consistent stress, sparked by racism and sexism, can cause irreversible health risk to Black women.

This problem inspired Ashlee to found Health In Her HUE (@healthinherhue), raising more than $4 million in venture capital to build a platform connecting Black women and women of color with culturally responsive healthcare providers, trusted health content, and community.

How do you build a venture-backed company without compromising your mission?

Before raising $4 million in venture capital, Ashlee Wisdom (@ashleejwisdom) built Health In Her HUE (@healthinherhue) by listening to Black women, earning their trust, and solving a problem the healthcare system had overlooked.

In this week’s episode of The First 200, Ashlee shares why community came before monetization, how changing the narrative helped investors see the business opportunity in improving Black women’s health, and why protecting your mission matters more than saying yes to every opportunity.

If you’re building a startup, raising capital, or creating a company with purpose, this conversation is one you don’t want to miss.

The democratization of health information on social media is powerful. But ☝🏽we have to be careful about where we’re getting our health info.

Before you trust health content online, ask 🧐:

→ Is it from a licensed clinician?
→ Can the claims be backed by credible sources / research ?
→ Does it account for how conditions specifically impact women of color?

That’s why we created CarePoint. Medically vetted. Culturally responsive. Quick and easy to watch.

Research consistently shows that Black patients often report greater trust, communication, satisfaction, and engagement when cared for by Black physicians. Patients who feel seen, heard, and understood are more likely to seek care, ask questions, return for follow-up, and participate in treatment.

This isn’t about saying Black doctors are better doctors.

It’s about recognizing that representation DOES matter. Not just figuratively but for the health & longevity of disenfranchised groups.

It’s about acknowledging that lived experience can shape trust.

It’s about ensuring that patients who want a physician who looks like them can find one.
