This holiday season has been so busy that it took me a moment to realize this December marks five years since I packed up my Toyota RAV4 with everything I could fit and drove from California back to Missouri. Five years — half the amount of time I spent living in Southern California.

Leaving California was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made, but also one of the best. People often ask if I miss it, and I do — a lot. They also ask if I’d ever go back, and I usually say, “I don’t know. I didn’t know I’d end up there or stay as long as I did.”

I also never, in a million years, thought I’d move back to the Midwest.

Being back for five years now and seeing how my life has unfolded has completely shifted my perspective. At the beginning, I felt confused, heartbroken, and like I had failed. But if I hadn’t gone through that — if I hadn’t surrendered and said “let’s do this” while feeling scared — I never would have known what was waiting on the other side.

My sister said something the other night that made us laugh. She said, “Wow, in half the time you were in LA, you’ve bought a house, gotten married, become a stepmom, started two businesses, and you’re about to buy another house.” She’s right.

I’m sharing this not as a grievance, but as a celebration. Before I moved back, I experienced some of the most painful years of my life. If I had stayed, I don’t know if I ever would’ve been able to look back with gratitude. I don’t know if I would’ve started my vintage business, met the love of my life, or become a stepmom to three incredibly loving kids.

Now, I can look back on those years with less heartache and more thanks. Every chapter — even the hard ones, even the beautiful years in LA — shaped the life I have now.
